Four of us ate 150 fresh oysters, BBQ crab and wild prawns tonight. No bad reactions, no illness. Just sayin'. And to dsquared - I don't work for an NGO! Sorry to bust your un-called for stereotype of me. La vita continua.

While I'm certainly glad to hear, this is supposed to be statistically indicative of what? ;)

two days to go until my trip and I seem to have caught a stomach virus... not a good way to start this thing :(

I did the visa on arrival in PP and it worked very well. Took photos with me, forms were handed out on the plane and the whole process on the ground only took a few minutes.

I would also agree that a visit to the genocide museum and a trip out to Choeung Ek is essential to help you understand Cambodia. It can be done in half a day and then you can carry on with the markets, bars and restaurants.

In terms of food I never had a problem but I didn't eat from street stalls (as I do in Thailand) as some looked very suspicious. There was no need to anyway as there are loads of good value restaurants by the riverside with some very good cocktail prices around sunset.

.

I completely agree that while not enjoyable visits to prison and choeung ek are part and parcel of cambodia. I would also read some history of the 70s since its still hard to fathom that 25 % of the population was killed in a small time frame of less than 5 years by thrir own government and the shadowy angka whereyou never knew who or where the enemy wrre and that phnom penh was cleared out by the Khmer rouge in a day. The banks schools hospitals. Seeing Angkor wat is one side of
Cambodia but there is a lot of more recent history to know and understand.

I suggest you read Michael Vickery's treatise of Cambodia on the years 1976-1982.

Has anyone stayed at NagaWorld Hotel & Entertainment Complex?

I have decided to go that route... may be a question posted in the wrong forum, but I am curious for informaiton....

same hotel on Orbitz and Hotels.com listed for the same nightly price, where Hotels.com clearly spells out free breakfast, free internet, free airport shuttle... but orbits doesn't. Can I safely assume this isn't offered on Orbitz?

Three questions:

1). Any recent experience with Cambodia visa? Best to get it in advance or on arrival? I'm happy to bring passport photos with me at the airport if its cheaper.

My experience with Visa On Arrival in Siem Rep , was that it was quick and efficient. In total it took me less than 15 mins from the time I left the plane till I was landside, and that included picking up luggage.

If it's not explicitly mentioned on Orbitz then I'd assume it's not part of the package.

There's a 20% Orbitz code in the 'Hotels' section. There's probably a valid 10% code on Hotels.com too. Taxi from PNHt is $9.

Or walk outside the hotel gate and a tuk tuk should cost $5-6 to the river.

I thought the same... Orbitz never got back to me so I ended up cancelling the deal

Two nights ago a Japanese couple, the man having won something on the order of $4K US at NagaWorld, were shot and killed near their apartment building in Boeng Keng Kang, basically an ultra-safe NGO/embassy employee area.

They were followed when leaving the casino.

TrueBlueFlyer Mar 9, 2013 10:41 am

yea I figured casino would be too flashy for a broke a$s budget traveler like me

I thought this was an odd choice based upon prior posts of yours I've read but everyone does something atypical at times.......
