DL148 Delta 148 LAS-CDG declares emergency and diverts to Boston
Happened last night. News stories googlable.
Funny thing is, according to the flightaware map it flew about 700 miles (to Boston from the SW corner of Labrador) after declaring the emergency. Maybe decided Boston would be more convenient for an unexpected overnight for their passengers than Gander, which was a couple hundred miles closer?

Makes sense if the emergency didn't require an immediate landing.
BOS makes it much easier to re-accomodate folks (DL hub/focus city with daily flights to CDG / AMS / LHR for re-rerouting displaced passengers), easier to bring in a new plane (if necessary), plus you remove any issues around passports and visas since the plane lands back in the US instead of Canada.
Obviously if the situation was more urgent they would've gone to one of the handful of closer airports they overflew

It's not funny in the least. Also, fairly common (to the extent that diversions are common in the first place). It appears that this was both a mechanical and a medical diversion.
A longer diversion would only be contemplated if it were determined that the aircraft did not need to land immediately. The medical issue might also be one better handled at BOS.

They ferried in a replacement plane (777) from ATL. BOS was probably the closest hub airport where they could provide hospitality while waiting for the replacement aircraft, and possibly the closest commercial airport where Delta has a ground crew that also has a tow bar for that plane.
