Virgin confirms Ansett talks

11Feb02

SECRET talks between Tesna and the Virgin group would continue this week, according to a joint statement released by the parties.

Discussions yesterday had been very constructive and would be expanded during a series of talks in Australia this week.
Talks would involve Tesna principals, Solomon Lew and Lindsay Fox and Virgin Blue's chief executive Brett Godfrey.

Mr Fox and Mr Lew today said discussion with Sir Richard had been worthwhile. "We look forward to further discussion," they said.

The statement said the closed-door meetings would be held on the understanding that Tesna remained committed to the completion of the sale agreement with Ansett administrators regardless of the outcome of discussions.

The statement indicated the discussions would not be conducted through the media and no further announcements would be made until talks had concluded.

Australian Carriers Dampen Merger Speculation

Weekend speculation that Australian low cost airline Virgin Blue is holding merger talks with the country's second largest carrier, Ansett, have been denied. However, the two sides plan more talks over a possible business deal.

Virgin admits that a meeting was held in London, Friday, between Virgin Group chairman Sir Richard Branson and the two Australian businessmen, Lindsay Fox and Solomon Lew, who are trying to revive Ansett's fortunes.

Way Clear For Tesna To Take Over Ansett

The Sydney Airports Corp Ltd (SACL) today announced an agreement in-principle with Tesna Holdings Pty Ltd (Tesna), which is owned by

Australian businessmen Solomon Lew and Lindsay Fox, for the Ansett administrators to assign to Tesna the Ansett domestic terminal lease at Sydney Airport.

SACL chief executive Tony Stuart said the parties had agreed on a commitment by Tesna to operate as a domestic airline.
