Each leg.

I bought dirt cheap tickets for my family of three to travel WAS-BOS on the Acela today (under $200 total for all three of us) and decided to try BidUp. Placed the minimum bid ($120 each) and was accepted around 90 minutes before departure. With the BidUp it was still just under $200 per person for the full trip in first which I found very reasonable. This was my first ever successful BidUp.. first appeared mostly full and at some points completely full. Good service.

Did you get three seats together at one of the four-top tables?

No, seats were very limited when the BidUp cleared. We had two seats at a four-top, then I had a solo seat.

The geniuses in Amtrak management deleted the business class car from the Lake Shore Limited, so I can only bid on an upgrade to a sleeping accommodation, which I really don't need.

I took a trip earlier this year where I experienced the Wolverine train between Detroit and Chicago (I started my Amtrak trip in Cleveland, and took the Thruway bus from Toledo to Detroit). My big mistake is that I traveled on the day that all the students at the University of Michigan had to vacate their dormitories, and so the train was sold out from Ann Arbor to Chicago. Amtrak offered me a chance to bid on an upgrade to business class, but my bid was unsuccessful as business class was sold out. I did enjoy the ride on the new "Amtrak Midwest" cars and the train even arrived 10 minutes early at Union Station.

As with PL, any "information" provided as to the alleged adequacy of your bid should be regarded with extreme skepticism or presumed false. I recently had a successful bid at the bottom of the slider ("poor chance"). I am kicking myself for not attempting to bid below the bottom end of the slider.

My $275 bid for the Silver Star (RGH-TPA) 72 hours out to upgrade from a Roomette to Bedroom failed. Not disappointed as we had a Viewliner 2 Roomette.

BidUp Successes and Declines

I bid the maximum bid of $22 to upgrade from coach to business from Joilet, IL to Springfield, IL, on Saturday 3/2, the bid was not accepted either way. It was a small 24 business class seat section.

I bid the minimum bid of $85 to upgrade from a roommette to a bedroom from Glenview, IL to St. Cloud, MN on Sunday 3/3, it was accepted 36 hours prior to departure. The train was at capacity in accommodations and oversold in coach with passengers without seats sitting in the cafe car for part of the journey.

I bid the minimum bid from coach of $100 for a roomette and $140 for a bedroom from St. Cloud, MN to Glenview, IL on Tuesday 3/12, the bedroom bid was accepted 36 hours prior to departure. The train was canceled the day prior, but still not oversold in coach or accommodations.

Note the bedrooms that got assigned on both trips were the “A” rooms which are the smallest bedrooms due to the curvature of the hallway into the next car.

For what it's worth, bid-up to Acela First is allowable on the free business tickets earned for July/August during the spring promotion. The tickets cannot be changed nor may upgrade coupons be used. But the system is allowing bid-up!

My $425 from LA to Kansas City was unsuccessful for tomorrow.
Purchase price is $1200.
