Glacier Park Stopover
 

We are planning a trip on the Empire Builder and plan to stopover for 2 days at Glacier National Park on our way to Seattle. I've read several recommendations to stay at the Izaak Walton Inn in Essex, MT. However, I assume we would need a car to tour the park and haven't been able to find any rental car facilities in the area nearby. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding rental cars, other sightseeing options, or other stopover places.

Thanks. Based on reading that thread and other research, it appears that it might be better to stay at the Glacier Park Inn near the East Glacier train station. There are a few rental car companies in the area so I would be able to tour the area. transportation options near the Essex station and Izaak Walton Inn appear to be rather sparse.

This summer we arrived at West Glacier, and rented a car. Our train had a major delay, but the rental place was still open. The roads in the park were very busy, and we spent a lot of time queueing in the car.

There are buses in the Park, and I believe the hotels have pick up service from one of the train stations.

During July 2017, we spent a week at the Glacier Park Lodge at East Glacier (GPK). After arriving on Amtrak and checking in to the lodge, I went to the Avis agency located in the Glacier Park Trading Company. If I recall correctly, they picked me up at the lodge. Its certainly walk-able too. I had reserved the car months before our arrival there so the whole thing went pretty smooth.
