Targeted: Spend $220,000 from 7/1/15-11/1/15 and get a $500 statement credit

Received an email from Amex with an offer of a $500 statement credit if I spend $220,000 between 7/1/15 and 11/1/15.

This is on our U.S. based business gold card.

Anyone else get it?

Stack it with even a "low" cash back from several sites @ 1.5% and occasionally over 2%. Doesn't seem all that bad at $3300+. Subtract the fees from $2k AMEX GC's would eat less than $500 - assume shipping free if you use the promo for shipping. Also subtract the liquidation fees that vary depending on the route. You get the MR pts + some cash to boot. Ok deal if you are not currently working much else and can use a few MR pts.

We will spend well over $220,000 in that period so I thought it was an odd offer.

With a 2% cashback card [Fidelitys Investments Reward Amex Card, for example], you would get $4400--over 8x the $500 credit.
[A $5000 statement credit, would be a nicer deal.

But I'll get several hundred thousand points (with bonus categories).

Whoo hoo. More free flights.

Ummm... ok, but you would get that with or without the $500 credit, so not exactly sure what the point of this thread is...

Regards

Consider the opportunity cost. If you are about to drop $220k in 3 months, you could open numerous cards in that 3-month period and get much more than $500.

I think you got a pretty good ratio. I got a $2k offer for much higher spend.

Never received an offer like this, and I have an account rep. I feel left out.

Not exactly. It depends on your definition of "you." The OP said that this is on a business card. Any statement credit (including the cash back variety) would be to the same account, so it would be the business that gets the cash rebate. MR points can be redeemed for personal travel without a tax consequence, whereas cash back to the business would need to be spent by the business (or be considered taxable income, dividend, or distribution if used by an individual).

The point I took was that it was a false comparison to say that he could get $500 credit with this offer, or $4400 cash back with another card. The actual comparison is $500 credit plus 220,000 MR points, vs $4400 cash back on another card. If I were in his position, I'd find the $500 plus 220,000 MR points to be more valuable, and that's before the tax benefit.

Not everyone is a churner. Some people want to focus on running their businesses and not spend a lot of time researching and managing numerous accounts every 3 months.

I'm wondering, for those super-high spenders, why you don't get the discover card? 3% cash back (1.5% but doubled for first-year)?
