When You Will Not Earn Points You will not earn points for the following:
- charges processed, billed or prepaid to your Card prior to your enrolment in the program
- interest
- Card fees
- purchase of American Express Travellers Cheques and Gift Cheques [and gift cards?]
- Program enrolment fees
- balance transfers and credit card cheques
- cash advances
- loading prepaid cards
- the purchase of foreign currency
- any other transaction we tell you is excluded from earning points
==================================
If you buy gift cards through a 3rd party, they don't know that it's gift card. But from their own website....

I bought 10k worth of amex gc via befrugal.com to meet the business gold spend and it posted and I got the 75k points and I'm waiting for my statement to cut for the other 10k.
it does work, but maybe not through amex site directly. you should always be using a cashback portal anyway for amex gc, you get 1.5% back (variable)!

The site has changed since the last time I looked at it, which is not very recently. I think that there used to be a FAQ section with a straightforward disclosure that gift card purchases do not earn Membership Rewards, but I find nothing like that now. I don't know how the customer is supposed to know. As noted earlier the card terms do not explicitly prohibit gift cards only gift cheques, which are essentially travellers cheques.

Membership Rewards points do not post until the a few days after the next statement is generated. You should see the base points (one per dollar) in the pending category. The bonus points may, or may not ever, appear in the pending category.
