How / when to select seat on a Cathay (CX) award / flight (consolidated)
Hi, bought tickets from TPE - HKG using AA miles on CX, but cannot select seats, have called the Plat desk a couple of times, they haven't been able to either. Anyone have this same issue or know of possible resolutions or alternate methods to try?
Thanks, <removed outdated mod note> |

Thanks, Then call CX. |
zman's suggestion is the best bet.
I've had issues with this also, and it's usually because AA can only request seats from CX within 180 days of the flight. |
Yes, for some reason AA is not able to assign seats on some regional CX flights, just call CX. CX will also unblock seats for you if you have status, AA can't do that either.
|
All good advice but, as JY1024 posts, CX opens seat selection only 6 months out.

Strange. I just booked award flights LAX-HKG-MNL for October and was able to get seat assignments. Booked with EXP desk. Haven't tried to change the seats, though, so don't know how difficult that will be.

This is not true at all. I was able to get seats on CX F HKG/YYZ in Dec 08 for Oct 09 flights and ALSO when I rebooked as HKG/SFO in March 09 for the same Oct 16th date.
Both were booked with AA. mike As far as I know CX do not assign seats further than six months out. You can request a seat and they have some system in place that will assign the seat to you at the 6 month point. In my experience if I select a seat greater than six months out the seat map on EF will not show me in the seat. However once the 6 month date appears the seat maps change to show it as actually being occupied. |

Did AA assign the seats or did you request them through CX?

I will point out however that checking the reservations on-line at aa.com it shows the seats as "unassigned" but a follow-up call to them confirmed that they show us having the seats were originally told we given.:) It could be some sort of anomaly with Sabre or whatever interface AA and/or CX is using because I encountered a similar problem with two JAL flights on the same itinerary. mike |
CX only assigns seats 6 months out. You can check your seat assignments at Cathay Pacific at this link: http://www.cathaypacific.com/cpa/en_...anagemybooking
You will need your CX confirmation number which you can get from AA reservations. |
(Slightly OT thread hijack)
What's the best strategy to secure Y exit rows on a purchased AA codeshare on CX (AA6073/AA6086, JFK-HKG-JFK) for this November? I've read that CX is very good about letting OW Sapphires select these seats, hence the reason I did not go the NRT route. Just not sure on the codeshares if the best approach is to call AA or CX. Its my first time in the back on CX (ahh, those cutbacks and cost saving ideas ... you gotta love them) and some of these things are all brand new again. ... and yes, I could have the answer with 2 calls, but then how would everyone here fill their time? :p |
CX Seats
I snagged F seats on JFK/HKG flights but AA could not assign seats but only request them. I did this with the Expat desk and they said that CX would have the assignment listed in 24 hours. Looked up my reservation on AA the next day and my seats were there. If you go to the CX website with the CX PNR you can view your seats but not change them or update your information. For that it requires the 10 digit ticket number (not the AA 001 number the CX 160 number) to unlock your record. That I don't know how to obtain and since my seats were what I wanted did not investigate.

Of course, I may be able to change them again at the 48-hour check-in. |

No problems in changing seats online without the ticket number, however I noticed that some of the other functionality (special meals etc) required the ticker # (which is actually given on the AA E-Ticket confirmation email). |

You can't even check in on line on cx's website as your booking is not on CX's flight number. |

Ok, I have looked at my e-mail confirmation from AA and I can find the 001 ticket number but not the 160 ticket number CX is asking for. What am I missing? I have the CX record locater but it still won't let me update anything.

But .... :p So I took my own advice and called. First call was to AA . Lots of hemming and hawing and discussion about how they first would need to charge $15 to assign a seat. Finally convinced them to waive the $15. Then found out they can't assign exit rows. "Sir, they are booked, not held" they said. This even though I could see them open under my company's booking system when I go in through the CX flight numbers. Then tried the bulkhead 55G (777-300ER). According to AA, they could access these, but when they tried to assign, nothing would happen. The system would not record it and would not give a reason.:rolleyes: Ok, gave my thanks to AA and hung up. Called CX and 2 minutes later I had secured exit rows (54K) on both flights. And they show under my reservation on aa.com. Man, I really love CX. Hopefully my first trip in the back doesn't spoil the fun. :D |
Help, how can you request a seat from CX? I called AA and they helped me to request a seat, then when I login to CX and use the 5-digit PNR to check, I can see the status is on reuqest, window seat, but not a seat number.
I then called CX, they said they cannot assign a speficified seat to me. They can only request a window seat as well, and I need to confirm this upon check in. Which CX number shall I call so they can assign me an exact seat? |
You need to have status of Platinum or EP on AA (which translates to your OW status) in order to get seats assigned in Coach. Business and First can be assigned at any time.
If you do not have at least Platinum you can only get them within 24 hours of departure. If you have status, just go to www.cathaypacific.com and click on Contact Us and pick the country you want to call from. I will typically just call directly to HKG but the USA number has been pretty good to in the past. |

I just had the exact same experience. I called AA to get the CX res number, mentioned seats, and she said she could assign no problem. So I said great, and confirmed everything.
Went to the CX site, and it showed them all unassigned. I said ugh, and went to AA and looked up the res, and it showed the regional flights assigned, but the long-haul flights (JFK-HKG) unassigned. I had hung up 10 minutes prior. Went here to do a search and lo and behold, same issue on the front page. Strange. I had reserved row 12 both ways, in the little mini-business cabin. Wonder if that has anything to do with it. She said my status (PLT as of now) was reflected and I was seeing all available seats. Looks like it might not have "stuck" on those legs though. Wonder if they're reserved seats. Row 11 is I think, but not row 12 (on a 77A to clarify). |
Please note:
If you did your original booking with AA and you assigned and have confirmed seat selections through AA, it may not show up on CX's system when you try to view them on their website. |

Question using AAdvantage Mile for CX First
Using AAdvantage miles to fly Mrs. BdaDiver and yours truly to Bali next July on an All-Airline Award.:cool:
Tickets are issued and we're good to go. Again, I was not able to obtain seat assignments on the four CX flights as the agent said that she received a message from CX that it is too early for CX to release seats. :( Can anyone tell me how far in advance we can reserve the seats? We want to ensure that we get seats 1A and 1K on the trans-pacific flights from SFO to HKG. Thanks in advance for helping. |
For whatever reason, CX only does seat assignments 6 months out. This appears to be for everyone, even CX elites, so you should not be disadvantaged by this, so long as you remember to call (either AA or CX) at the 6 month point.
Btw, on the 747-400, 1A and 1K are, by far, the best seats for couples, but, still, it is not super easy to have a conversation. You can dine together, though. |
You can request seats at the 180 day mark. To cut out the middle man, I'd suggest just getting the CX record locator from AA and calling CX directly. That way you don't have to call AA, who then "requests" the seat from CX.

Thank you to PresRDC and JR1024. Will diarize to call CX @ T minus 180 days.
Can not wait to get on that big bird to DPS. |

You can reserve your seats online vice calling if you have the PNR. Just use the "Manage My Booking" tab on CX's website.

I got the 5 digit CX code from AAEXP desk but I still could not select seats but I finally figured it out. With SecureFlight, my reservation has both my first and middle name. So in the Given Name field, be sure to include both your first and middle name or whatever is shown on your AA reservation.
I did that and I was finally able to log in and select seats. |
When can I select CX award seats?
I have managed to get 2 F seats on CX for SEA-SFO-HKG in early October. When can I select seats for these? I'm going with my GF so would definitely want to get either row 1 or 2 as early as possible. Thanks in advance!

Seat selection on AA coded CX flights?
I am a platinum flying on AA coded CX flights JFK-BKK. Is there a way I can choose/change my seats online?
I did try to search, but came up with nothing that seemed like it was a match for what I am doing. Thanks |
Easiest way is to do it online through the Cathay Pacific website as mentioned earlier in this thread. Please note that when you call AA to get the CX PNR, some agents have trouble finding it. I've only been told vaguely that it does not appear where they would normally expect it to (i.e. with codeshares operated by say JL), but apparently if they dig deeper into the reservation they will be able to find it.

These emails are usually generated to notify you of a schedule change (AA Schedule Change in the Subject field), or if you simply request the itinerary to be emailed to you (AA eTDS Itinerary Document in the Subject field). For some bizarre reason these emails include four items of information for each flight in the itinerary, that do not come in the E-Ticket Confirmation emails: 1) the type of aircraft 2) the flying time 3) the terminal that the flight operates to/from 4) the booking reference on partner carriers, if it is not the same as the AA Record Locator This information is useful so this is the document that I print and carry with me. However, note that it does NOT include the ticket number so you need to either make a note of it on this document, or carry the E-Ticket Confirmation email also. Happy Travels. |

But note that you may already have that information if you have received an email from AA relating to your reservation, other than the E-Ticket confirmation email.
