Just need to vent

Idk why I’m so upset right now but I do not EVER check a bag.

Just boarded PHX-CUN in FC as EXP with one roller board and a tuxedo in a standard garment bag that came with the tuxedo that will be hung in the closet.

GD GA at the jetway tells me I have two carry-ons and unless I can put my tux in my carryon I have to check my bag.

Had to check my bag and I’m not happy about this.

.what the serious F.?!?!?!?

Did your tux fit the dimensions of a personal item?

IDK….i don’t ever travel with anything except one roller board Standard Sized garment bag. It would have fit underneath the seat if it had to.

Whether we like it or not, the GAs technically have to enforce the carry-on rules that AA has filed with the FAA. I've never seen a garment bag small enough to be considered a personal carry-on item. Knowing the exact dimensions would be helpful to know.

This happened to me when I was on the way to a business trip to London. Ended up costing them about $3-4k after they lost the bag they made me check.

Karma.

So much for AA being a "premium" airline.

If it makes you feel any better a few weeks ago a UA GA snapped at me “no third items SIR” and pulled me aside at EWR to consolidate a handheld, just larger than my palm, 9in by 6in travel wallet into my backpack 🙄. Sometimes you just gotta smile and nod and let those unfortunate souls have their moments of faux power…

It's frustrating and annoying.

However, the GA waa correct. Unfortunately, they're not empowered/motivated/trained/whatever you want to call it to have the common sense to be customer focused. The result is rules have to be black and white.

Personally, I'd rather have employees follow the rules to a T than have them make crap up like you see so often. At least that way they're consistent and you can be prepared.

That sucks. I take it the rollerboard didnt have a suiter insert

LovePrunes Apr 27, 2026 8:37 pm

That's when you just put the garment bag under the seat in front of you for a moment while the gate agent is gate agenting... And then as soon as they close the door, up it goes into the overhead bin. Yes I understand it's a tux but then you wouldn't have had to check your bag. I think a tux in a garment bag could be folded for 15 minutes and then be flattened out without any lasting damage. That really does stink

I dont get the aversion to checking bags. In 30 years of traveling i have had one truly lost. And ~10 instances of needing to be delivered. My world record is to MCO, kids, wife, and nanny. 12 pieces. I went to the bank before and got $200 in $5 and $10 bills ;).

I agree...it's one of the elite benefits I use the most. On AS we get 2,500 for bags more than 20 minutes late... last Fall my family collected 10,000 miles for 4 late bags at CVG...lol.
