I took French Bee that has strict carryon policy yet everyone showed up like American style. Neck pillow, 2 shopping bags, just the biggest contraption.....they didnt enforce anything but every person had more than 1 personal/1 carryon. And the carryon were way bigger than the measurement rules.

Timely thread. On my ORD-DTW flight today (E170) the FA singled me out for bag harassment. I travel with a regular 30L backpack that, when filled, is exactly the max dimensions for the likes of Ryan Air, and a small day pack. The backpack always goes into the overhead and the day pack under the seat. The FA insisted (shouted) for me to put the backpack under my first class seat, where it would in no way fit. And to put the day pack in the tiny cabinets over the A seats, where it would in no way fit. Those will barely fit a small purse. It got to the point where I thought I was risking getting tossed from the flight but fortunately she got distracted and I just ignored her and sat down. Later she came over to me and started interrogating me about the contents of my day pack and continued to insist it would fit in the tiny space above. It was pretty weird, and in the end there was plenty of space in the overheads.

That's when you just put the garment bag under the seat in front of you for a moment while the gate agent is gate agenting... And then as soon as they close the door, up it goes into the overhead bin.

 The gate agent stopped OP before boarding. This was not a case of being asked to check a bag while on the plane. The problem was getting on the plane at all, not what to do with the garment bag once there.

OP could have put the tuxedo on (over his existing clothes) and then boarded. Problem solved.

I missed that the tux was his 3rd item he tried to bring aboard with a limit of 2. I mean usually they won't let a third item go regardless. My suggestion was that the tux might be considered a carry-on to fold under the seat in front of him, and then stretch it out once there's room... Same thing applies since he had an over-limit third item, if he could have done a temporary consolidation and then take the tux out to lay it flat in the overhead. I'm sure it was frustrating.

Probably best for avoid fly AA now, and in the future. Just horrible experience.

Having a carry-on and a garment bag is standard practice...prior to 1990.
Suits are required in my business presence in Asia. I carry on by folding trousers into the carryon, and wear the suit top, carefully folding on top of luggage in to the overhead. Supima cotton shirts with heavy starch will stay crisp for three days if you keep the sushi off them. |

We live in Texas and go to Mexico a lot. Cozumel last February for diving.
1. Cancun has Cartel troubles. A lot. So does Tulum. Be safe and do not go out after dark unless you have armed guards with you. Standard in Yucatan to have guards now. 2. A Tuxedo in Cancun will be a sweat fest. All year long. 3. We never ever check a bag with any carrier, but especially AA. 4. When I wore suits for professional events, I had a suit zip up triple fold that would fit in my roll aboard folded down. Still have them, used them last week. No wrinkles. 5. If you are in a jam, medical devices do not count as carry ons. Put some medical crap in there with it. suit bag example- Amazon.com: Hleelomi 5 Pack 40-inch Suit Bag Garment Bag for Travel and Storage, Garment Bags for Hanging Clothes with Zipper and Visible Transparent Window, Black : Home & Kitchen tl:dr- Lightest carry-on bag - Page 41 - FlyerTalk Forums Edit- our avoidance of checking a bag started with AA in 1988. On our way to HNL, we checked bags, and they got lost. Took 2 days to get them back. We got to experience Hilo Hattie's and still have the sandals. However, having a Pupu tray on our balcony at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, in our underwear, looking at the creeps with telescopes in the condos across the street is a core memory. |
OP here...made it home without having to check my rollerboard and/or Tuxedo. Zero problems boarding in CUN. :)

It's the same issue with no rollers on PSA CRJs even if the bag will fit.
I also did some googling re Skywest. It says they have the same policy when flying for AA. And that Delta Skywest flights also require bag checks-which is incorrect. So, would I have to check my bag (which fits in every luggage bin except on CRJ-200s) on AA Skywest segments, or not? |

I refuse to fly PSA for that very reason.
