You can create your own moving map by using Here We Go app and download the US or other country maps to your device. Switch the app to work in offline mode, and it uses the downloaded maps and GPS data (works best when sitting in window seat). This only works over land. It does not show planned flight route.

I have a separate app that shows the GPS data (altitude and speed).

Just make sure the device is in airplane mode and GPS is turned on for this setup to work.

I've used this setup on flights that don't have IFE. Works pretty good to see where you are.
