Standby Clearing Procedure - When are they supposed to start?
 

Waiting for AA1476 as a standby passenger, don’t know why I got no SDFC. Boarding 8 already still no standby cleared even though flight has free seats.

When is the AA gate agent supposed to start clearing the standby list? Missed out on boarding my group 2 by now

It's all up to the gate agents. Sometimes they will do it sooner, sometimes they will do it later.

Ended up being very weird today...

They upgraded the 1st person on the upgrade list around boarding group 2 ... then waited all the way until final call to clear all standby's and upgrade the remaining 2 pax on upgrade list.

I took my seat in MCE that I received via standby on final call, then after boarding they upgraded two non-revs (pilots) and walked them from back to front and eventually handed me an upgrade to first as well.

I can't complain about the upgrade, but kinda not an orderly process....

I’ve seen it as early as an hour before departure and as late as right at the final call like you’re describing.

Really a crapshoot.

AA Gate Agents seem to be granted a lot of latitude as long as they get flights out on time. You’ll see a lot of variation in how they manage upgrades, standby, etc.

I asked one time and the GA said “early bird gets the worm” and gave me the last seat in FC.....granted I was number 1 but it was well before 30 mins.

Think of all the things you have to be thankful for on Thanksgiving!

• getting an earlier flight
• getting an upgrade
• ...and thankful for the AA crew working on the holiday!!

This sounds as though it was a quite an organized process and that it worked well. The only potential criticism is that passengers were upgraded after boarding. But, most people would prefer that to waiting at the gate until definitively upgraded or not.

Presuming a sold out flight, at T-60, all passengers must be checked in or risk being off-loaded. Thus, there may be some availability for SB created an hour out. At T-15, all confirmed passengers must be boarded, so additional availability is created then. On flights which are not sold out and there are no disrupted passengers to deal with, there may be additional space which could become available more than an hour out.

Thus, there are at least three buckets (check-in, gate, free seats) and the downside risk of clearing too many early is that confirmed passengers do show up and SB's, having been told that they have a seat are then told they don't. Best to wait and.

Thus, by leaving it with the GA's to work from what they can see on their monitors, what appears to be disorganized actually permits the GA's to confirm SB's as the situation progresses.

AA gate agents basically do whatever they want, whenever they want. Trying to figure out when GAs are "supposed to start" clearing standbys is irrelevant since they will do it when they feel like it.

Exactly. I confirmed Same Day Stand By at the CLT AC Lounge as #1 , and started the long walk to the E gates. When i got there, #2 and #3 had been cleared, with my initials clearly at #1 . I had to wait until the aircraft had boarded an there was a no-show to finally get a seat.

Given some of the upgrade threads I’ve read you were very lucky the GA came and moved you up as many wouldn’t have done that.

Domestic First Award Standby
 

If one has a Domestic First Award Ticket on a 7pm flight but wants to standby for a 4pm flight, how does the upgrade list work.

I.E. Since I'm standby do they clear the Upgrade list first then clear the standby's then if there are still F seats they upgrade me? Or can I clear before the Upgrade list is upgraded.

I have no shot (if they clear upgrades before standby's) as there are only 2 seats available on the earlier flight.

Or is it possible that I can SDC if there is any seat open on departure day?

I am an AA Plat. But it is out of PHL so I assume my status won't get me any brownie points.

Greatly depends on the load factor. If the flight is fairly open standbys will begin to clear at T-1. If the flight is full it's a case of determining how many no shows/misconnects there are. That occurs around T-15.

In the past I've been able to be listed as a "DSR" which is supposed to trump the upgrade list. That being said, finding a gate/AC agent who knew how to do that and the gate agent to understand what it means was generally too much to ask for.

You can try to SDC 24 hours prior to your desired flight, in my limited experience I have been unable to SDC (by AA.com/App/AC agent/telephone/kiosk) on a First Class award since they went to this new dynamic award even though my inventory was available and no change of routing.

Otherwise, yes, either agents or the new automated UpgradeTron process will clear upgrades before standbys.

If you were within 60 minutes of scheduled departure, then this is within the GAs (significant) powers to dispatch a flight. Before that time, however, a domestic flight should not be under gate control. People might still buy that seat, or a pax might switch to that flight with higher upgrade status.

The GAs that wait until T-30 for upgrade clearance sometimes create unexpected opportunities for peeps who know how to game the system. There are methods to "snipe" an upgrade using an alternate instrument in that 30 minute timeframe. To jump the queue so to speak. None of this is against the rules, but it's always interesting to see the last few seats disappear and not go to the top people on the list. For those looking to prevent getting sniped: It's often worthwhile to go to the gate at T-60 and inquire with the GA as AANYC1981 did so above.
