AA EQD run on BA - Upgrade using Avios. Issues crediting to AAdvantage

I have an upcoming J cabin EQD run on BA purchased via BA.com that I'd like to upgrade to First using Avios. Has anyone done this? Any issues with the original ticket value/miles crediting to your AAdvantage account?

I'd really like the upgrade but afraid of messing up the accrual.

Booking on BA smarter than booking on AA for EQD?

I am a novice when it comes to doing things the smart way. Till recently, work always booked the cheapest option and my travel was limited to Domestic (15 trips in a year) and barely made GOLD each time. This year I have had 6 international and 6 domestic and another 4 planned before end of year.

I always thought booking on AA metal and AA flights meant better bang for buck in terms of EQD and EQM.

However reading through the forums looks like BA offers a % of the miles flown as EQD and not the actual dollar amount which makes it lucrative for long haul flights at cheaper fares. Am I right in my thinking? I have about 5 international trips to India next year and I have 2 to Europe. So would it make more sense to book them on BA.com? TIA.

Do your research on AA.com. But in terms of EQD you often get more than you actually pay when on partner flights. It varies by carrier. You earn more award miles when booking on AA and AA marketing, EQMs are usually also better on AA than on partners.

I wouldn't limit to BA -- especially if going to India. QR is the way to go!!!

I agree Qatar is a better airline serving that part of the world but I am only allowed PE - company not that liberal yet to offer Business.Qatar does not have PE and their Economy has more booking codes that only return 5% of miles as EQD than BA. Correct me if I am missing a point?

Is your run AA or BA marketed? If BA marketed and you can upgrade with Avios and if they allow you to use their Avios and credit to AA, it may well credit as F. But some airlines won’t allow you to use their instruments and credit to a partner airline. These may be questions for the BA forum, in terms of upgrading a BA marketed and operated flight with Avios (and crediting to AA).

If AA marketed, you may be limited as to upgrading.

Look at the AA and BA earning charts on aa.com to see. Usually, you’ll earn the same EQM but a percentage of flown miles for EQD flying BA marketed flights.

Look into CX - they offer 20% miles to EQDs when booking into (E) premium economy.

CX PY fares easiest to help achieve EQD requirements? JL and BA aren’t as competitive as CX?
