Mileage upgrade award with stop over?

Mileage upgrade award with stop over?
Dear AA sages,
please forgive my ignorance. Also… Please forgive that I cannot search on my mobile so easily.
going back many years, I’m not sure if it’s like this today, I could use a fixed amount of miles for an upgrade of word on United which would include a stop over. For example:
LAX-ORD in Jan 1
ord -lhr on March 3.
Fare basis in B class (so no fare break). Upgrade both segments would be the same amount as though I were just doing LAX - LHR without the break.
does American offer this as well? Or would it be to different awards?

Just being in the same booking class, does not imply it is a though fare
