AA1897 SAT - PHX emergency descent, ELP divert 3 Jun 2018 (hail)

Just had a sqwuak and circled El paso for a few circles and landed. Dropped from 35,100ft to 9,000ft in 14 minutes. Had a rate of 2700ft/min for a while on the tracker.
Flight landed safely at ELP

Anyone on the flight or know what happened?

Seems like hail damage that has shattered the windshield. Visibility only through the side windows. Seems like no one got injured.

There are a couple photos floating around. Nose cone is destroyed and front windscreen (on pilot's side) looks like the windshield of a car following a riot.

I am guessing the pilot didn't have the Progressive Snapshot plugged in when he made that abrupt descent.

Severe weather forces American Airlines Flight 1897 to divert to El Paso | KCBY

EXCELLENT cockpit crew. No forward visibility.

Wow. They were between FL340-360 when this happened, it seems. That's some high-level weather for hail.

Curious as to why such a severe hailstorm didn't appear on the plane's forward looking radar.

Hail and other frozen precipitation doesn't show up as well as wet precipitation on airborne weather radars. As such, a severe hailstorm can actually appear to be a mild or moderate rainstorm. @:-)

No other choices at 35K feet? I would think at that flight level and speed, the pilots wouldn't want to go into even a "mild" rainstorm. Must have been a wall of clouds in front of them?

It was quite a severe WX event for NM apparently. There was a tornado warning and a severe T-Storm warning yesterday evening.

The front did bring rain to the Ute fire and Buzzard fire though which helped containment.
