What works for one airline (or two in this case) may not work for others. Also, where do you propose they find slack in the frames that have lie flats to offer this to SAN?
B6 has new Mint frames entering the fleet, and Delta has upgauged some int'l routes from 757s to 767s, A330s, etc. to spare this. I don't think AA has that kind of slack when the frames they're taking delivery of are domestically configured 737s, A321s and A319s.

Unlikely. JFK-SAN is only 1x daily, although circa 2009-2012 it was operated with a 763. More likely any new 321T/other domestic flat bed seat capacity would probably be BOS/DCA-LAX and additional capacity on MIA-LAX.

I'm not going to say zero chance because anything is technically possible, but I don't think AA will add lie flats out of San Diego anytime soon.

JFK-SAN is showing as 2x daily in December. But not in January or later

If they are going to add a new route with lie-flats I would think BOS-LAX will get it before SAN-JFK. If recent decisions are any indication, AA has very little interest to really invest in a strong hard product in the domestic market.
LAX-MIA, a premium route for AA, doesn't have lie-flats on majority of the flights either.
Also any spare widebody with flat beds most likely will be dedicated to the Hawaii long hauls after the non-refurbished 767s hits the grave.

Indeed! Enjoyed those 767s on the SAN-BOS run--and they were sold as coach!
Sadly, SAN has never been able to hold down premium equipment. DL used to shuttle quite a few of it's BE-equipped 767s back in its "Domestic BE" days, but I imagine the current single JFK frequency will disappear as soon as they need to return the 757 to D1 service with the summer schedule.
But why talk about lie-flats? At this point I'd just like to see the return of the 738s or even Maddogs as opposed to the pos LUS 321s that have invaded with their lack of power and IFE.
