What flight were you on?
Sometimes they'll call up a party of two to let them know only one of them will get on, and ask if they're alright separating.
There's a lot of pressure to close the door at D-10 and get the flight off on time, initially this was causing standbys to miss flights with open seats, but that issue has been rectified for the most part, so I'd be surprised if that occurred here.
