Don't worry. All miles earned in 2016 will count.

When did u earned the 15kEQM? 2016 then it means nothing for the moment and will reset end of Feb 2017. U need to earn 25k for GLD, 50k for PLT, & 100k for EXP in the same calendar year. The only shortcut is spending $40k on the Citibank World Elite card, that will give u 10k EQM. Miles earned have an expiration of 18 month in case of non activity in the account. Hope this answer your question.

I believe AA is not shifting the end until 2018. To quote from their 2016 "AAdvantage program updates" page: "The membership year is also changing. Beginning with the 2017 membership year, elite status will be valid through January 31 of the following year."

So they are taking two months off of the membership year? I.E. if I qualify this year for 2017 it will expire at the end of 2017 rather than in Feb 2018?

One month. From February 28th/29th to January 31st. These days miles can be assumed to post faster so the 2-month grace period is an anachronism.
