4 AA planes standing at EZE
Just arrived in EZE. Surprised to see 4 AA planes standing there. All in new livery, one in OW livery, none of them standing at a gate. It was 4 PM. Looked like they were just parked there.
Does anybody know why AA has so many planes at EZE. This is more than they need for their operations I would think. |
AA has four daily EZE flights: 2 from MIA, 1 from DFW, 1 from JFK. All four arrive in the morning (roughly between 8 and 10am) and sit in EZE all day before departing back to the US in the evening (roughly between 8pm and midnight).

Thanks, I only found the MIA flights.
EZE seems to be a good market for AA whilst other carriers like BA are cutting back due to the economic condition of the country. |

Well, I can't help but wonder then why it's so darn difficult to find a sAAver award to EZE (while GRU/GIG seems a bit easier).

AA has a pretty long history in EZE. Years ago they actually owned a significant share of AR and were tasked with helping run the airline but AR was nationalized so that relationship came to an end. From time to time AA operates five daily flights with three to MIA and one of those being a day time flight. Up until three years ago they also operated a daily flight to MVD on a 767 or 777, that was always a fun 25 minute flight on a
Nowadays with US management and their operational focus they are doing maintenance while the planes sit all day. Actually investing quite a bit in spare parts inventory and training. |

That was a tag-on flight I believe, right? Now they fly n/s MIA-MVD so it isn't necessary.

Correct. Used an EZE based crew that just flew over, sat in a hotel all day, and then flew back. Now an Air France 777-300 flies the route.

I wonder if this is the best way to utilize their aircraft. I found this similar situation with many long-haul routes in the AA network. Take HKG for example, the 77W sits on the ground at HKG for around 20 hours. You'd think that they could serve more frequencies with less aircraft with better utilization...

The MIA-EZE daytime flight is only operated seasonally during the austral summer, so the fact that it's not operating currently does not qualify as a cutback. That being said, given the deteriorating FX situation in Argentina I would not be surprised if AA dumped DFW-EZE entirely (least demand of the three USA-EZE flights) and discontinued the seasonal MIA-EZE daytime flight. The BCRA is almost out of liquid reserves and is not allowing airlines to repatriate proceeds of sales.

The DFW down-gauge to a 787 is also seasonal, with the austral summer going back to 772. Given that, I wouldn't expect any move from AA to reduce EZE service until the political situation clears up. Flights are yielding well (try finding Saavers to EZE!), the economic situation is not going off the cliff like Brazil is, and OneWorld owns the market now that the LAN/TAM group is part of OneWorld. |
