Transfering Miles Between US & AA

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but any idea when we might be able to freely transfer miles between Dividend Miles and AAdvantage? Historically, when did this happen in the United / Continental and Southwest / Air Tran merger timeline?

FWAAA Jan 27, 2014 3:19 pm

I may be wrong, but there might not ever come a time when we can "freely transfer" between the programs. What we might face instead is a date on which Dividend miles become AAdvantage miles.

They have indicated there will be no ability to combine until the programs are merged - as FWAAA indicates, at that time, DM may become AAdvantage miles anyway.

If they change their mind on that, the earliest I would expect it would be after March 31 (when US joins OW).

The most likely scenario is a date will be announced as a target for account justification - if your US and AA accounts match, your US DM will be absorbed into your AA account (status, etc. as well, most likely). There will additionally be a deadline by which this must be done (or US DM will be lost).

At least this is the way it has happened elsewhere - I made sure everything matched in my TW Aviators and AA AAdvantage account and - it all went seamlessly. And AA actually extended the deadline once or twice (but there are still those out there on the 'net, inquiring if they can save their Aviators miles - no.)

When will this be announced? When they are ready (US will be migrating to Sabre, and the IT preparation will take some time).

AA/TW is probably a bad example here, as it was a purchase in pieces rather than a true merger. I would expect any "orphaned" DM accounts to just become AA accounts at some point, no action required. (Of course, the miles might still expire at some point, but they'd do so as AA miles.)

My HP account became a US account in that merger with no intervention on my part; I didn't even have a US account.

Agree!

There was a period of bilateral transfers between DL and NW. There was a period of transfers between CO and UA. There was a period of transfers between WN and FL.

The issue of merger vs. asset purchase is meaningless. In all instances there was (will be) - as here - one surviving airline on a single operating certificate with a combined FF program.

Transfer AA Miles to USDM?

Is that possible now? I have longstanding accounts in both.

JDiver Jan 29, 2014 7:55 pm

No, it is not possible and it will very likely not ever be possible. Your USDM account is most likely to be merged with your AAdvantage account (assuming you have one) or it will transition into one.

To be fair, precedent exists. Prior to UA and CO fully merging programs, miles were allowed to be transferred between two linked accounts. But heck if I know the possibility of something similar happening with AA and US.

I wouldn't say it's "very likely not" ever going to be possible. It may, or it may not...but at this point no one knows either way (or anyone inside the airline who does know, isn't saying!).

Yep. I transferred miles back and forth between UA and CO several times during the transition period before full merging under my CO number in order to redeem rewards. I think it is quite possible that US and AA might do something similar...or not.

Will the new AA merge the miles?

If a person has status in both USAir and AA...will the miles/status be added together and potentially bump up to a higher status? Example, USAir Platinum with 75,000 miles and AA Gold with 30,000 miles from 2013...Will the New AA add the 75,000 and 30,000 and have this member at their highest tier?

For miles flown in 2013 for 2014 status, the answer is no. You'd have US PLT and AA GLD.

For miles flown in 2014 for 2015 status, the answer is that no one knows. There's been a lot of speculation here, but no definitive announcements from the airline yet.
