AA are normally pretty accommodating when there are large schedule changes, even to the extent of opening up award inventory if needed, but you have to know which flights you want to be on when you call.

If there are no other suitable flights then there isn't a lot they can do to help you sadly.

Welcome to FT.

First, yes, they can do this, as you surmised.

Second-have you looked at any options with connections? Maybe something works better that is not direct. AA have shown general willingness to work with people, but only if there are actual options.

If there are no options, there's not much they can do.You do have an option to get a refund, but that won't help you.

What about leaving the next day?

Cheers.

You can probably get on the late flight to MIA (it leaves at 5:45) and then take a flight to STL the next morning. You would have to pay for a hotel in MIA though.

I think you are either stuck leaving early or stuck spending the night on the way back away from home somewhere.

AA is usually pretty good about accomodating schedule changes. Since you are on an award ticket though, it maybe tougher to change.

Ultimately, you can cancel the tickets and get your miles back for free. I am guessing this is not your preferred option though.

It looks like they moved the STT-MIA flight back about an hour and there is no longer a valid connection to go STT-MIA-STL in the evening. There is now no way to fly STT-STL without leaving in the morning. They may let you just move your flight back a day if that works for you.

You would be out of luck. Happens all the time.

Not at all. As presented above, there are several viable options to remedy the situation.

Cheers.

He would not be out of luck. OP would have a valid "recourse" in leaving the next day or the next available flight.

Indeed physically impossible to get a later flight and home in the same day with AA. Looks like you can:
1) Stick to what they put you on (an early morning yes but you only really miss out on the morning).
2) Overnight via MIA, JFK/LGA or BOS. I might choose the JFK->LGA route (December in NYC is great ... but hotels are pricey).
3) Ask for a credit/refund and if you have miles on DL or US ... there are afternoon departures on both carriers -5:10pm and 4:00pm respectively.
3a) I doubt they would do this but you can try to see if they will route you on AA (STT-JFK) and DL (JFK-STL). It's the 1pm departure out of STT so not too much of a real option ... but never hurts to ask.

Have them move you to the next day and enjoy another day in paradise.....

I see a double connection (via SJU and MIA) that departs STT at 12:15 PM, arriving STL at 10:05 PM. It has a five-hour layover in SJU, but would give the OP an extra three hours in STT.

aa.com is also showing this itinerary, with the same departure and arrival times as above, but with a shorter connection in SJU, and a longer connection in MIA:

I was just about to post the above option. Personally I would try to take the 1:05 pm flight to JFK and overnight in Manhattan and fly out of LGA the next day. Otherwise the option above looks to be the best for you.

SAN-man Aug 6, 2009 3:16 pm

A noon or even 1:00 pm flight from STT gives you pretty much no time to do anything on the island that morning unless you're staying right by the airport.

I would ask for the evening flight to MIA, overnight in MIA, and take a morning flight to STL. There are plenty of very nice but inexpensive airport hotels in MIA, plus it'll still feel somewhat tropical - unlike ending a Caribbean vacation with a night in NYC in December.

UAL123 Aug 6, 2009 7:15 pm

Or instead of overnighting in MIA, you could overnight in Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, Richmond, Washington, Raleigh, New Orleans, Fort Myers, or Atlanta. If you spent the night in MIA there is no nonstop flight to STL the next day until 3:00pm.

AAerSTL Aug 6, 2009 8:25 pm

Welcome to FT, Wax!

Could the OP route the following:

AA 856 STT-BOS 3:10-6:25
AA 1491 BOS-STL 8:20-10:35 (next day)

May not be ideal, but could be better than overnighting at MIA, and earn more miles in the process :D

AA really needs to retime their limited STL-MIA service to help it better connect with the banks they currently have. I would like to see the route go from 2x 757 to 3x 738 but am not counting on it anytime soon.

UAL123 Aug 6, 2009 8:31 pm

Yes the OP could do the above, but getting more miles would not be a factor since it's an award ticket.
