.

As this was the overnight flight, I opted to sleep and skip any of the snack or light meal offerings.

Prior to breakfast, the crew asked if I wanted a beverage. I really wasn't sure and the sense I got was that their coffee was not awesome. The Ceylon tea was recommended and it was actually great. I had 2.

I always enjoy the small touches like having the milk served in a little side dish versus those tiny single-use creamers offered elsewhere.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8747ce6027.png

I chose the Western breakfast. Fairly simple but hot and tasty. Omelette was very good, nice to have a bit of broccoli, bread bun was very nice and fresh, croissant was a little too dry. I did not eat the hash browns, sauce or sausage.

FWIW, even though the menu didn't state it online or in-flight, YVR-HND this month indeed had Hibiki 17 minis! :)

So did the HND-YVR flight on Friday (October 12). More than I can say for the Duty Free at HND ...

Ever since they changed their ramen a year ago (approximately?), it's just not nearly as good.

All menus for every route are posted online on the ANA website.

Exactly !!!

Photos of the meals are the reason we post. These threads are very active on the AC, LH and CX forums, for example, even though LH also has their menus on their website (in a much better format than NH).

IMO, the menu only lets everyone know what the options were. The photos tell the story of what was selected and how it looked or was presented.

Indeed, I enjoy looking at the meal pics too. I don't see the point in posting pictures of menus at a distance that you can't read.

The quality of the food was really high, every bite was delicious. It tasted fresh and like something you'd actually want to eat on the ground.

You mean as opposed to tasting like something that had been dropped on the ground? :D

I guess we need to start a best meal in the sky thread somewhere else in FlyerTalk to compare this one with the other ne plus ultra repasts.

Having a forthcoming flight from MUC to HND in spring next year, I followed NH's menus for a while now. What I noticed is that the International Cuisine usually has a beef dish, but the menus only mention the way it is prepared and the sauce it comes with. Does this mean that it's really only the beef in the sauce on the plate, no side dishes like potatoes or vegetables or anything? Or how will it look like? I'm really a bit confused, as it seems that for the Japanese menu every single item is listed.

CPH-Flyer Nov 5, 2018 3:23 pm

There are sides, but mainly meat. This is from LAX NRT (sorry for the picture quality)

I'll be flying in CGK-HND-BKK (both on 789) and was seeing on ANA's website that there are a lot of special menus. I don't have any particular need but was wondering if it's worth trying a specific one.

If you have no dietary restrictions, I would go for the menus offered on board. It is not like the US where ordering a special meal is likely to get you a better option, more likely the other way around The standard meal is likely to be the better option

These are pictures from December (2018) from JFK-HND.. it shows the amuse, the main dish (international) and dessert (which I opted for the cheeses). Overall, this was such a great introduction to ANA since the food was fantastic! There were some quircky parts but overall the service was 5 star. We somewhat recently went on J class on Emirates and my husband and I did comment on how flashy/glamourous everything was (love the bar on the airplane!), the lounges were spectacular in Dubai. But the food was not. ANA food was way above other airlines by far. Apologies for anything wrong since it's my first time posting pictures here.

Have an upcoming NRT-ORD flight in J. Should I preorder the Japanese meal? I’d be bummed if I ended up with the western dinner, but a post upthread makes me wonder if I’ll get a lesser option by preordering. Thoughts?

Are you thinking about my post where I write "don't order a SPECIAL meal unless you need it"? Securing the Japanese menu is not ordering a special meal, it is just choosing between the standard options in advance. If not that post, which one did you have in mind?

yes, thanks, that’s exactly what I was referring to. the website does refer to it as ordering a ‘special’ meal, so I was concerned I’d somehow miss something better—I suppose this is old UA thinking, where they would give you a coach special meal even if you were in business (on domestic flights, to be fair).

sounds like I can order my ‘special’ Japanese meal in advance and get exactly what I’m hoping for. Thanks!

Food on flight from SEA

I just flew from SEA to NRT and was very impressed by the service and food in J class. Apologies for not having pictures to post with my commentary. I had the Japanese meal while my husband had the International steak meal. This was a nice chance for me to try some foods I haven’t encountered before, and I really enjoyed how pretty and thoughtful the plating was. I enjoyed the amuse, especially the cheese ball, though I wasn’t crazy about the somewhat soggy crackers that the crab and pate were served on. Overall I thought the small bites were fine - I enjoyed the sashimi and bite of lobster the most. I wasn’t a fan of the eel aspic or the pike conger with sweet potato noodles, mostly due to their texture. However, I was blown away by how delicious the grilled yellowtail was - it was a good portion and well seasoned. I don’t eat a ton of cooked fish but I’d happily eat this any day. The miso soup was also really tasty and was more flavorful than miso I’ve had in the US. I tried both sake selections available with my meal and found both to be a bit on the sweet side. I was stuffed from the meal and just had fruit and green tea for dessert. Their green tea has a really nice toasted flavor to it; I usually like to have sugar in tea but this was delicious on its own. My husband reports his steak came with broccolini and mushrooms. He said it was all cooked well and was tasty if not very creative.

For a snack towards the end of the flight I had the miso ramen and rice crackers. I’m pretty sure the ramen is instant but it was really flavorful and had a nice creamy consistency. It was a perfect snack towards the end of a long flight. Overall, I think this was the best food I’ve ever had in flight, and I am excited to try a new menu when we fly back!

Has is become the standard to serve the regional J meals with the tin foil covering still on? Happened both to and from Hong Kong. It is not a big thing, but it does not look very nice.

Hasn't happened to me yet. I think it's a big thing for NH :) but not for other carriers since NH usually isn't this lazy?

I saw a couple of comments on this regarding the meal service on the A380 to Honolulu, as that is also regional meal service. I passed it off as growing pains on the A380 service. But now I had it on two flights.

At least my food arrived hot, and not as some reported on the A380 cold.

Yeah, it is kind of a big thing on NH. JAL does not do this, even BA or UA does not do this. It looks slobby.

If you look back at my OP that started this thread, you'll see I was pretty pleased with the breakfast meal on NH 804 in Aug 2018. That was also my first flight on ANA's B789.

NH 843 HND-SIN June 2019

This breakfast was outstanding and significantly better than last year.

I'll assume it is part of the new menu and meals on international flights.

The hot meal portion was hot, the bread rolls were fresh, the yogurt and fruit was very nice.

Every single item here had flavour and it was the best breakfast I've had in a year.

As I wrote upthread last year:
"The Ceylon tea was recommended and it was actually great. I had 2.
I always enjoy the small touches like having the milk served in a little side dish versus those tiny single-use creamers offered elsewhere."

On this flight, when I asked for the same tea, initially the crew said they didn't have it, which I thought strange.
A few minutes later, the purser of FA came by to tell me they found it.
Once again, it was perfect.
Presentation may not matter all the time, but little touches like this do make a difference.

I would rate this flight, crew and food significantly higher than the NH 106 in F, HND-LAX which was one of the 4 sectors on this trip.

(I have some other non-meal photos from this flight which I will post separately.)

CPH-Flyer Jul 20, 2019 7:31 pm

It is interesting that NH does the long haul flow of J service to Singapore, where Honolulu gets the one tray regional service despite the flights being roughly the same length.

It is a lobg time since I have been to Singapore, but I seem to remember that JAL has the regional service flow. Maybe because I tend to do overnight flight.

I assume the significantly better food, drinks and service were due to the announcement of the improvements on international routes. Had read somewhere that HNL is a leisure route and so even if similar block-time to SIN, perhaps different focus?
