Just flew NH 8 NRT-SFO
Menu description of appetizer plate:
"Shinshu salmon tartar with salted lemon and MIYAZAKI CAVIAR 1983"
The appetizer was excellent and the lemon really added flavour. FA plated jar fof caviar on table, open top, placed is as you see it and spoon on the side. Agree that plastic spoon was strange and the type of spoon used for the amuse bouche could have easily been used here as well.

The dish looks delicious.
About spoon, some say that the metal (other than gold) spoon changes and damage the taste of caviar. Even plastic spoon is said to be better.
I'm not sure how true it is. (Unfortunately, I'm yet to fly in F.)
ANA might be believe in this, or might be trying not to be blamed from the person believe it.

I read a story years ago about the best way to eat caviar scientifically ("What Einstein Told His Cook") exploring all the options and configurations. The conclusion was the most practical way to enjoy it is a plastic spoon (Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Sample Spoon was the ideal choice). So I will be enjoying it in a suite on an airplane with a jar and plastic spoon. I'm looking forward to my flights later this year

I've just seen the OMAAT reviews for AF La Premiere First and there is the little white serving item which was mother of pearl.
Scroll down past the menus, you'll see it in 2 photos (including close-up).
