First Class Availability (Or the Lack Thereof)

On AS flights, if I understand correctly MVPG/MVP complimentary first class upgrades and mileage plan redemptive first class upgrades all come from the extremely elusive U bucket. But does mileage plan first class award tickets come from the same mythical U bucket? If not where?

First class saver awards are booked in "A" and the unrestricted first class award in "F".

This is true, but I think the OP was talking about mileage upgrades, which do come out of the U bucket.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I guess I wasnt clear in what I was asking. The question is, is the A bucket as non-existent as the U bucket?

Historically, there were usually less A than U. Nowadays, history is being rewritten so I have no idea.

There does seem to be some sort of relationship between "A" and "U"; upon grabbing one of the available "U" seats, I have seen "A" disappear. It's as if both are subsets of a larger "free seat" bucket in first that yield management controls. Not always the case but watch it sometime using the availability tool.

In terms of inventory allocation, U and A are the same. That is, if you have 8 U and A seats, when 1 U is taken the U and A inventory will both drop to 7.
