Using a discount code removes certain Saver availability?

Without the discount code applied, valid fare comes up as bookable

With the discount code applied at search, the fare shows Saver as unavailable, even though it is available on the first leg, and forces the whole itinerary to be main cabin

What's going on here? Called in and agent couldn't get it to fare properly as Saver on both legs either.

Looks like the discount cannot be applied to flights if the base fare total (before taxes are added to fares) is less than discount amount. The Saver fares would look to reduce it below that amount. Also, you can't combine a Saver fare in one direction with a Main or higher in the other due to fare rule combination restrictions. You can combine a Main fare in one direction with a Main or higher class in the other direction, but not with a Saver fare.

T&Cs say discount code is issued in the name of the traveler (who must be on reservation) and is not transferable.

I do see what you're saying but I'm not sure if that's actually true.

Unbookable w/ discount code

Bookable w/ discount code

Do you have the T&Cs of your discount code?

If so, you may post those discount code T&Cs here to see if someone can figure out if something in the discount code T&Cs explains (clearly or not) why this happening.

Are there any Saver fares that it will allow you to book? While it doesn't mention Saver fares specifically, it does say "Discount not valid on all fares".

Yeah, it lets me book certain Saver fares but they are still the same X code. According to AS rep, there is only one fare bucket for saver.

Saver fares are actually "dual-inventory" fares. While they all book into X class, the Saver fare basis codes start with a Main class and there must be both inventory in X class and the Main class in order to book a particular Saver fare filing. As inventory in lower Main classes is zeroed out, it simultaneously moves the Main and Saver fares up to into higher priced fares. This is how they keep the price differentials between Saver and Main in sync no matter what Main fare is available for purchase. The underlying Main class of the Saver fare being booked should always be the same of whatever Main fare is available for purchase. It doesn't seem like this would have anything to do with ability to use discount.

Saver fares will have a 'B' in second to last character of fare basis code. While the matching Main fare will have an 'M'. You can see from below there is a $40 price differential between Saver and Main fares on SNA-SEA fares. While both fare basis codes start with G below, only the Main fare will book into G class and the Saver will book into X class. You can find fare basis codes of flights you are booking in the "Fare Rules" section on alaskaair.com.

willoL and thabc like this.
