Transcon Breakfast/Dinner

A quick mileage run LAX-EWR-LAX on the A321. Nice trip overall.

Breakfast

Upgraded at about T18 so no pre-order, but I was in row 2 so I got my choice. Pulled pork bowl was delicious.

Bloody Mary is a salty, forbidden treat, but hit the spot!

Solid breakfast. The yogurt was some kind of berry flavor and was also very good.

Dinner

We took a mechanical delay, then strong turbulence (some of the worst I've experienced, for probably 65% of the flight) kept the crew in their seats for more than two hours after takeoff. I pre-ordered the apricot chicken, which I enjoyed.

A little ditty, about Jack & Diet . . . plus nuts.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...908ec31d84.jpg

Also a solid meal. The salad was especially good. I was, however, starving by this point, so anything would have been devoured.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6328e60d0a.jpg

The most boring flavor, but still good.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...bf92ae2a75.jpg

I watched all eight episodes of season 2 of "Hacks" and napped a bit. On top of everything we made a rare easterly landing at LAX, then a long taxi. We arrived at about 12:35 a.m. Still a fun day of flying.

Pre-order for BOS-SEA-BOS at the end of the month is still apricot chicken/butternut risotto - by my math we should have gotten a new menu in early January

well, yesterday was Jan 20, and BWI-SEA had the same two choices

have to say this was my worst AS F meal in recent memory — the “risotto” was more like a combo of pearl barley & quinoa, w a whole bunch of walnut pieces scattered over the top … it tasted ok, but as pcoll reported was rather on the dry side; there was also way too much inedible debris (big bits of rosemary sprigs, plus a few papery walnut “skins”)

no PDB service, and despite explicitly asking for two minis of Buffalo Trace and a glass of ice, the FA brought me a double on the rocks after saying “I’ll serve your beverage, I don’t want you to have to do anything but enjoy it!”

< sigh >

on my way back from the lav after the FA cleared the entree service, she asked if I wanted another drink with dessert … I inquired as to what flavor ice cream to expect, so she opened the wrapper to find Salt & Straw vanilla with salted caramel ribbons

I again asked for two minis and a glass of ice, and explained that part of one was going to help the ice cream soften … the second FA (who was seated in the jump seat) was *quite* impressed

Your description of the risotto perfectly described my risotto the other day on BOS-SEA....is that not what it was originally meant to be? Needless to say I won't ever order that again.

Looking at these reviews, I'm glad I didn't pick the risotto

So far I've been super lucky, batting 4 out of 4 - Jan 17, 18, 20, 21 - SFO-JFK the "Pork Shoulder and Scrambled Egg Bowl" each time, the scrambled eggs tastes amazing. It's so good that I wish AS could install airplane ovens in the SFO AS Lounge, because the lounge scrambled eggs are downright AWFUL compared to the airplane one

Knock on wood, but so far I'm 3 out of 3 - Jan 17, 18, 20 JFK-SFO that the fruit and cheese plate all had Brie. It's a smaller triangle than I'm expecting, but I'm grateful it's on the plate!

On AS 402 SEA-CHS this morning; first time I’ve had the crepes. Not much to look at, but they were tasty. Came with a pack of Cholula, which made me happy. 😁

AS 1102 SAN-BOI Tuesday Jan. 17, 2023
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a3ed8c42f.jpeg
Was a piece of pita sparsely covered with 1 (at the most 2) ounces of chicken.

Very attentive FA who came through repeatedly with drinks and also a snack basket. Could have been a more substantial "meal" given that the flight took off at 5:30 pm and arrived at ~8:45 pm

I want to check what they are serving in F for an upcoming flight on 1/29. I had previously pre-ordered but the. Used a GGU to upgrade to F. Now in the app it just says “Something happened on our end. Please try again later.” when I open the menu. Is this a common issue, and if not, any tips on how to reset it?

Figured it out: Had to use the website to “cancel order” and then the app worked.

AS 417 PIT-SEA on 1/29/23
Apricot & Prosciutto Chicken
Butternut Squash Risotto

My experience is that if you ordered a coach meal and then get upgraded, that you cannot use the "modify/change" button, it just doesn't work. You need to cancel the original order and then you will be able to place a new order.

ETA: Written before OP changed their post

I decided to expand my horizons and order the risotto for the first time....big mistake....this has to be hands down the worst meal (in terms of both taste and quantity) I've ever had in First Class on Alaska. I ate about half of mine and was thankful for the delicious guacamole and chips as well as clam chowder in the Admiral's Club before the flight. They really need to add an appetizer or salad for a flight this long.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...8d630429b5.jpg

The service was seriously wrong. Roll should have been on a plate and the tray should have included a salad.

I can't say I love this dinner rotation. I avoid that risotto, but the apricot prosciutto chicken is tired, too, and those squash rings aren't particularly tasty.

Wide variation in how FAs serve the ice cream. Sometimes it gets served on a rectangular plate with a napkin and spoon, which is the most gracious. I've also been given the ice cream container with nothing else and told to use the tiny plastic shovel under the lid.

And my experience has been that PDB offerings are extremely rare on the transcon flights, which is sad since that ought to be the most premium flight. For whatever reason they seem more common on shorter flights.

I have been waiting to get the vanilla ice cream to order the Irish Creme liquor to go on top. My last few flights have been chocolate or snickerdoodle. Both delicious! Have always been served ice cream on a plate with spoon.

Haven't experienced snickerdoodle. The 3 flavors I've had rotated are the sea salt caramel, chocolate brownie and double fold vanilla. And definitely had a mix of ice cream on a plate with spoon, ice cream no plate with a spoon, and ice cream with expectation to use plastic shovel. The variation makes me think there are no instructions given to FAs on how to plate. Or that it's permissible to deviate. As another example I would say 70% of the time the nuts are served with the first drink service and 20% of the time on the dinner tray and 10% of the time no nuts served or as a mid-flight snack.

Kurt Jan 24, 2023 12:47 pm

On this flight the ice cream was served on the tray with the salad/roll/main dish. As I said, service was very late and it was about 2 1/2 hours after takeoff when food arrived. I moved the ice cream aside for my photo, then "plated" it myself for that shot. Normally I would expect a large napkin and a spoon to arrive with the container.

Nothing I have seen in this thread would dispel the notion that it would be a good idea to make the opportunity to eat before your AS "First Class" meal experience.
