Where did PDX<>FLL go?

Anyone have details why it’s off the schedule in June? Did this flight earlier this year and it was so convenient, sad to see it go :(

flytoeat Apr 5, 2021 7:24 am

FLL seasonal reductions and no cruise business (yet).

rotnkornkid Apr 5, 2021 9:12 am

Well, let the Alaskan planning gods know that I miss it dearly :)

PDXPremier Apr 5, 2021 11:19 am

And FLL was the go-to mileage run destination for awhile....but the flight options have been reduced and the price has gone up. I always went through SEA, LAX, or SAN since the direct flight from PDX earned less EQMs and was usually operated by an -800 which made upgrades even more difficult.

There's an existing thread on these Florida routes -- https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/alas...-tpa-gone.html
Some where meant to be year round and went to seasonal. A number were always seasonal when loaded last summer. I believe PDX-FLL was always seasonal, although they ended up discontinuing flights a bit earlier than originally scheduled.

Exactly though the CDC finally seems willing to relax some cruise policies

navydevildoc Apr 5, 2021 2:22 pm

They went and hibernated into the same cave as SAN-FLL.

PDXPremier Apr 5, 2021 2:33 pm

We all know it was mileage runners and weekly discount codes that were keeping these flights afloat (get it? no cruises! afloat?! lol) .

I don't know what's worse: being in a relatively cramped space with thousands of others or being stuck with no ports willing to let you disembark. It was really an eyeopener... As for the route, I think once people feel comfortable on cruise ships and more people are vaccinated that the route will come back.

Nothing about that demographic is revenue positive for AS so why should they keep it around

rotnkornkid Apr 7, 2021 4:16 pm

I think I was the lone first-class-buying passenger that just liked a convenient route to visit his sister. But $450 tickets don't justify the route. RIP PDX<>FLL.

tphuang Apr 7, 2021 4:45 pm

This and SAN-FLL was originally added as a retaliation against B6 entering EWR-LAX/SFO/SAN + FLL-SEA/PDX. It's anyone's guess on the future of these routes.

I always took the connections via LAX and/or SEA and with the frequent discount codes it always ended up being around $90 each way in main cabin which brought the cpm down to under .03/mile....talk about a no-brainer of a mileage run.

Nah, I was the other one. I was almost always revenue F on SAN-FLL.

For the concerned mileage runners, PDX-EWR returns soon.

Any idea when LAX-BOS might return? It's my main route for biz travel right now, and AS (along with just about everybody else) cut the nonstops during covid. It makes for a long trip when there's at least an hour of driving on each end, too.

June 17th, but that's a placeholder, for the time being. We'll see if it sticks when they update the summer schedule.

Early May would work better for me...

With AA/B6 cooperating on the route, there is little room for AS on LAX-BOS. It was already weak from the moment they took over VX and circumstances have not improved for AS since then.

Cut through July now. Don't see this one coming back. AS cut their mainline fleet quite a bit when they got rid of the Airbus planes. It will be a couple years before they are back to 2019 levels in their mainline fleet and these long routes that have been weak for them will be the casualties of that fleet decision. They did terribly in winter on this route so if it is not coming back in summer, it certainly makes no sense to fly it in winter. Maybe post 2023 once they have their mainline fleet back, they can consider it again.

It's a long route that's always been thinner than it seems like it should be. It would be better served by planes with less capacity, but they generally won't have the range.

The fact that AA/B6 are jointly operating 10 flights a day does not help AS at all either. California flights to EWR/JFK are also reduced to 4 days a week. With the OW partnership passengers to the Northeast from California can easily be pushed over to AA.

Which makes one wonder, what else has been axed from 6/17 onwards? I just checked my reservations in late June and they're all still intact.

Maybe someone who knows how to find/read that airliners.net thread can provide a schedule change update?

just saw that the early summer schedule changes are done through sometime in August. If you don't see a schedule change you should be good.

The airliners schedule change report doesn’t exist any more. He moved it to a paid site. If you have a route you want to check, google flights can provide the info. Put in the start and end point, pick any date, click non stop and Alaska only and you can hover over the calendar and see if the flight still operates and if so on which days.

Anyone know how far in August last weekend's schedule update went through?
