A320 vs E175 (first class and upgrades)
I am looking to book LAX to SFO with Alaska airlines soon.
I see that they fly both a320s and e175s on this route As a new MVPGold and I think I have a pretty good chance of getting upgraded i am curious to which aircraft I should try to fly on? both aircraft have only 12 first class seats Which means that my likelihood to get upgraded is probably slightly better on the E175s but I was wondering to weather the a320 first class is more comfortable or has better service? |

The flight is so short that it almost doesn't matter.
The new A320 seats are nice, but I've been noticing that they don't want to stop between full up and full recline very easily lately. In the event you don't get the upgrade, I kind of prefer the E75 because it's got better storage under the seats in front of you. As an MVPG you're likely to get the upgrade unless it's some kind of holiday or special event weekend. I've been flying out of LAX/ONT a lot lately and generally don't worry about what aircraft they're using. |
Traveling alone, I give a nod to the E75 for the single seat. That said, I'm 4 days out on an E75 and I don't expect an F upgrade on a mid-day SFO/LAX, and even Premium looks so so. That that said, for the hour airtime, I expect I'll survive. I survived WN last week with a B13 boarding card. (On the other hand, my 'recovery' flight was on JSX ;) )

On such a short flight it doesn't really matter. Pick the one that fit your schedule best.

As others have said, choose the most convenient time for such a short flight. If you want to overthink it, pick the flight with highest percentage of unassigned PC seats.

Love 1A or 2A on the E75

This is my first reaction.
The E75 F seats are also prone to do the broken tilt recline, so if there's someone heavy in the seat in front of you, and they recline, they're practically in your lap. For a longer flight, I would tend towards the AS 320, just because it's so spacious. |
LAX to SFO is likely to be ~40 minutes. It doesn't really matter, IMHO.

It's about 55 minutes in the air, and typically blocked by AS at 1:25. Time in seat is unlikely to be less than block time.

Yup. You can probably figure nearly 2 hours in the seat.

Especially if takeoff is from one of the 24s.

Flying N/S, it is quite rare to ever take off or land on the 25s. This was great when AS was in the most modern terminal in the history of LAX, and not so great from/to T6. It seems at times the plane is at least halfway to Ontario eastbound before the U-Turn to LAX, and then after landing, the tour of the field has one almost dipping in the Pacific.
