787: Code 1 vs code 2 scheduling?

I am flying NZ141 (AKL-BNE) on the 27th April and trying to figure out if my RU has any chance of clearing. Based on the seat map, it looks to be a code 1 787 (i.e. fewer BP seats) --- in fact, most NZ141 flights seem to be this config when doing a fake booking. However, I've seen a few code 2s operate the route in recent days/weeks (based on https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/nz141).

There also seems to be only one BP seat left (a fake booking of 2x BP has no availability) --- so I think my only chance of having the RU clear is if they swap to a code 2. Does this happen? Economy looks booked out for the same flight (!) so I guess this would involve denying boarding...

I would say low chance of clearing, based on next 2-3 weeks - Ive been trying to book a couple more trips to Sydney and Melb and I cannot find any availability in any class on days I want to travel until mid-May
I would suspect they don't need to be giving upgrades away currently !!
Does anyone know the problem - is it a shortage of flight crew / cabin crew or aircraft. I would have thought they would have put more flights on to match demand, so I am assuming there is a rate limiting step to more capacity?

They only announced last week they were bringing everyone back. So next step is for them to all go back to the classroom to get current. That is not a small task a finding the time & finding the teachers as need to take those people off the line to the teaching.

Also they only have one 777 back in service so a lot of the 789s are still doing freight only.

Availability on all airlines seems to be really low currently, I'm on NZ282 to Singapore on Sunday morning and the travel agent said the whole business cabin was booked. Same with trying to get to Dubai next month, no-one seems to have business seats available ex AKL.

At this stage upgrades generally only seem to clearing due to people getting COVID in the week before their flight or failing a pre-departure test.

Im booked NZ6 on PE 18 May on a 789 with code 2 (increased BP and PE cabin) and I cant select a seat. EF shows all seats already taken (not blocked) and theyre still selling 1x U seat for that flight. Tells me theyre overbooking quite a bit with a pretty steady cancel/no-show rate from T-7

I am not 100% convinced your flight is overbooked in PE.

When polling the AirNZ seatmaps, my experience is that NZ withholds from ExpertFlyer those seats that are retained for allocation by airport control. On EF these show as occupied rather than blocked.

In any case, they are unavailable for seat selection.

I am on NZ6/5 in early Jun and have been following J and PE loads very carefully as I have GE gifted RUs pending that, sadly, seem unlikely to clear.

Good luck with your RU clearing!

Thanks TK! I did wonder if NZ was withholding occupied vs blocked on EF as they often show blocked seats in all 3 classes. Fingers crossed with the RU but dont hold out much hope
