Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Your route YYZ-LHR-IST-MLE-SIN-HKG is within the MPM for YYZ-HKG. Ask for HKG to be made the destination and the trip recalculated. See what happens.

Point of turnaround is the point furthest from origin, it shouldn't be something you declare to be whatever you want.

Change your HKG-PEK-YYZ to HKG-TPE-YYZ when Eva air opens up and be done with it and get $450 back.

Yeah good point, was thinking to do this. I'll take the hit on itin fee change but overall will be ahead.
Just did a few test searches over the next 3 months, no availability from TPE-YYZ for some reason, maybe cause it's high season EVA closed off those seats.

TATL Summer 2015

For the spouse and myself

YOW - IAD UA
IAD - BRU SN
BRU - NCE SN stop 1 week
NCE - ZRH LX turn 2 weeks
ZRH - GVA LX
GVA - EWR UA
EWR - YOW UA

All good connections except for at IAD - a bit long at 10 hours.
60,000 points and $231

For the kids essentially the same but week later departing and no Nice

YOW - IAD UA
IAD - BRU SN
BRU - ZRH LX turn 2 weeks
ZRH - GVA LX
GVA - EWR UA
EWR - YOW UA

60,000 points and $197

Schedules and the need to visit family restricted the ability to do more stops

Figure I saved $4,000 or a bit more (and avoided Rouge to NCE) for 240,000 miles so $0.167 per mile
I know not great value (compared to business class) but not too bad either

10 hours is more than enough time to head into DC and see some of the sites. To keep costs down, you can take the "Flyer" to Falls Church Metro and then catch the train into the city.

Booked today for next summer. I wanted to lock in something before the changes tomorrow, though I wish I'd had more time to search for flights. I know I couldn't have done better in terms of cost but I might have routed a bit differently.

BKK-IST TK J (stop)
IST-YUL TK J
YUL-YOW AC Y

Even here I am usually loyal to AC (well, using their IkK or what's left of it) and end up paying over $1200 in charges.

I'll take you for a beer in Bangkok tho...

Super Elites will no longer pay YQ on AC metal in 2015, so that's going to screw up a lot of valuations - it'll open up space for non SEs though!

This is new and worrysome. If they start charging YQ by adding up each segment instead of by entire route like before.

Weren't they always doing that?
It's like 450 + 450 for 2x AC TATL, and probably ~400 each way on thai/lh. sounds right to me.

No?

If you booked YYZ-FRA-HKG they would charge the total route YYZ-HKG YQ ($250ish) - not add up YYZ-FRA + FRA-HKG

Similarly if you booked YYZ-HKG-AKL on AC/NZ - they would charge you $450 for YYZ-AKL vs $250 for YYZ-HKG + $0 for NZ HKG-AKL
