Routes that do not have fuel surcharges (YQ) when operated by carriers that normally charge YQ:

1. USA-Germany-Other country. If only the Germany-other country segment is on LH it does not have YQ. E.g. DFW-FRA-BLR with TATL on UA and FRA-BLR on LH.
2. USA-Canada-Other country. The USA-Canada segment on AC does not have YQ if the Canada-Other country segment is operated by a carrier that does not charge YQ. E.g. DFW-YYZ-ADD.

Please list your AP Taxes and SURCHARGES on AP reward tickets

so the other day I posted that I got a ticket on Aeroplan for $ 81.06 from YYZ to MIA one way on AC.. I'm then flying from FLL to LAS with Southwest after my cruise..try to book something for LAS to YYZ but remember that the wife had some AA points so check out AA from LAS to YYZ...gasp...the total came up to $ 5.60. My lunch cost more than that! so even though its two connection, we booked it..damn that was cheap!

Welcome to my world.

I regularly get US-Cda flights on UA for $2.50. In all fairness though, Cda-US flights are usually ~$55 because of extra taxes and what not. (Hopefully the "what not" will be all-embracing so the nit pickers on this board won't jump in here to correct me!)

This is off-topic, but yes ex-Canada has crazy tax/fees
e.g. YYZ-LGA one-way is 4500 Avios + ~$50 per person
but LGA-YYZ one-way is 4500 Avios + $3 per person

Same goes for YYZ-MIA/DFW/LAX, it's more $$ ex-Canada

I know USA airport system is a mess (subsidy and all that), but I am jealous, because sometimes I don't think our system is really better either

YYZ LHR Sept 2014

Aeroplan (dDiamond)
59,500 miles + $695.16 scamcharge

AC.com - same flights
$978.06 all in

"Savings" = $282.90

Net Aeropeso value = 0.47 cents per mile

Aeroplan value proposition: descending rapidly

Did you factor in the value of the miles you would have earned if you paid the $978?

I always thought the extra charges for Cda to US were due to TSA fees?

YYZ AIF is already $28.25 with HST, then another ~$13 for Canada security fees.

However, there is a significant pop for US taxes. Plus part of the reason the AIF is as high as it is (likely at least $5 of the $25 AIF), is the USA requirement on YYZ to provide extra space for a pre-clearance wing.

U.S.A Transportation Tax 19.67
U.S Agriculture Fee 5.62
U.S.A Immigration User Fee 7.87
U.S. Federal Customs Fee 6.18

Booked a Market Fare reward.
YOW-YYZ-MIA.
MIA-YYZ-YOW.
32,500 miles + 114.74 taxes and fees. (dDiamond status)
The ticket is worth around $550 for tango so I am somewhat happy with the value. I had to get the person on the same flight I am on for convenience.
Booked into Tango(S) on the way there and flex(G) on the way back.

YUL-ZRH is open on 2 days; BOS-ZRH on half the month; plenty of UA availability; especially in Y;

You are complaining because you didn't do your research and you let AC win...

Bravo

I was playing around with it today and was quite pleased to see SEA-BKK for $99 if you picked the EVA/Air china combos, def illustrates to me that its gonna be much more important in the future to pick flights based on airline not time

It very much depends on your priorities... if minimizing connections is a goal which is certainly true for many travelling with their significant others, and you were trying to fly SEA-BKK in J, you could certainly fly SEA-TPE-BKK on Eva, but you are going to be in an old antiquated plane with recliners. Alternatively, you could pay some YQ SEA-NRT-BKK on an NH 787 with a fantastic business class then switching to the Thai A380 in NRT, also a great product. If it was me, I'd pay the extra money to experience that. On the other hand, if I was in SFO, I would definitely save the money and fly on Eva's fantastic Royal Laurel flat bed service.

Well said, the last couple of posters. We all have different priorities; sometimes we want fewest or most connections, visit new airports, or even fly on a certain aircraft type.
