e.g. If I'm SE, I'd pick YYZ-AMS/CDG/ZRH nonstop (no YQ) instead of say YYZ-YUL-ZRH-Destination, or YYZ-UA hubs (EWR/ORD/IAD)-Destination

One can even try the AC 787 without YQ

Ah. Living in SFO, I can't fly international AC without a stop, so it doesn't have that benefit to me.

But the 787 is nice :)

YYZ-MAD-YYZ in Y

60k miles

Canada Domestic/International Air Travel Security Charge $20.60
Spain Departure Charge $24.40
OG $0.60
Spanish Security Tax $4.00
Canada Harmonized Sales Tax $2.60
Canada Domestic/International Airport Improvement Fee $19.90
Nav Canada - Air Navigation Services $24.00
Total per passenger $96.10
Total passengers 1
$96.10
Total airport taxes, fees and surcharges (USD) $96.10

However, the Nav Canada fee is listed as "Carrier Admin. Service Charge (YR)" in the itinerary PDF. So what is it, a Nav Canada fee, or a "carrier admin service charge"?

Please tell me YR is not the new YQ for redemptions. Obviously $24 is much less than $286, but if they're just going to invent a YR on redemptions to offset the loss of YQ, that makes the perk less useful.

Cancelled YYZ-SYD on AC33. We had 2Y 1J tickets and 2 preferred seating. Got back $1770!

Booked United LAX-SYD 3J, $188.00! I did have to "buy" 3Y YYZ-LAX with dDiamond but there was a fare sale so 49,000 miles vs 76,000 the day before with $242.00YQ.

So I did "lose" the 49,000 miles (LAX-SYD is the same miles as YYZ-LAX-SYD) but got a decent departure time leaving us 8 hours in LA, always wanted to visit Venice beach.

The money we got back from AC went to spending an extended stay in central Brisbane at a much nicer place on AirBnB than we originally had. :) With money still left for a quick hotel stay in LA.

Thanks AC!!!:p:p:p:p

Why not Swiss or Turkish to avoid YQ?

crimsona Apr 23, 2015 5:20 pm

Or on LH F since they opened up SFO and LAX A380 until end of schedule? (Or is that done now?)

Flyer4Ever Apr 23, 2015 6:14 pm

I got the following itinerary all in J.
YYZ-PEK (STOP), PEK-TPE (STOP), TPE-PVG, PVG-YYZ. AC and CA flights. For June to July.
Only problem about direct flights is the expensive surcharge..paid $6xx.xx and used 150,000 miles..Ok deal at least?

BTW, was wondering if I can add another stop to this itinerary. I also want to stop at SIN. Not sure if that is possible.

tng11 Apr 24, 2015 4:52 am

1 way FRA-LAX in LH F:

62,500 miles + $430.80 ($277.50 YQ) per person.

Very much a case of book now, ask questions later. Needed a way to get back from South Africa in February and locking in a nice and long LH A380 F flight was too tempting to pass up. The German departure taxes are absolutely atrocious - I'll probably fix it later to depart from another European country or from SA depending on what I can find.

Was gritting my teeth as I'm currently sitting on a liveaboard in the Celebes Sea, and doing the AMEX MR transfer/booking on AP with a very weak 3G internet connection. :p

If you had stopped in Hong Kong in addition or in lieu of Taipei, I noticed the fuel surcharge part drops to about 100 even with the AC flight to Beijing

uni3052 Apr 24, 2015 2:59 pm

Once again I noticed how unlucky we are with all the surcharges charged by AP. I wanted to book a one-way ticket LGA-YUL.

Nav Canada - Air Navigation Services $7.50
U.S. International Transportation Tax $21.70
U.S. Passenger Safety Fee $6.90
U.S Passenger Facility Charge $5.50

Total per passenger $41.60 and 7500 AP points

Same route on same day with American Airlines using 4500 Avios: $6.86

I had enough avios this time so I booked with AA.

Why can't AP charge the same? :(

Nav Canada is an AC surcharge similar to YQ. It is not a legitimate tax.

US transportation tax is 7.5% of the revenue base fare and should not be charges on award tickets.

$6.90 is correct.

Not sure why AA does not charge $5.50 as well, it appears correct to me.

canadiancow Apr 24, 2015 4:04 pm

That reminds me - I meant to write the FAA about that transportation tax.

YVR-YOW-YFB-YVM / YFB-YOW-YVR (open jaw), economy. YVR-YOW flights are on AC, everything else is on 7F (First Air). $124.16.

YWG-YRT-YFB / YFB-YOW-YYZ (open jaw), economy. Only the YOW-YYZ leg is on AC, the rest is 7F. $85.31.

YYZ-IST-MLE in J for 2 pax, $122 in fees.

After complaining about "forced fees" in a thread I started a while back, it ended up working out. the love/hate relationship with AP continues....

Yes x 3.

9 hour layover in IST. Should get some time to explore that lounge. TK also offers a tour of Istanbul if your layover is over 6 hours. It includes a stop at a "Fancy Restaurant"....

Thanks, check that tour time actually fits and know that it costs Canadian $60 USD for a Turkey VISA

No...routing through HKG dramatically reduces YQ

Routing through HKG isn't good enough, it's having HKG as a destination.

YVR-HKG-SIN gets hit with the YVR-SIN YQ, but YVR-HND-HKG has a dramatically lower YQ amount.

HND-YVR is on a recliner (regional 787 layout) though, so I wouldn't take that flight. If possible I'd route through Seattle since that's the long-haul lie flat layout

ciana May 1, 2015 11:15 am

Just made the change from:
2 J seats
YYZ-YUL-FRA-TXL 45,000 pts + $550 per person (AC AC LH)
to
YYZ-BOS-IST-TXL 45,000 pts + $110 per person (AC TK TK)

Great savings!
550-110 = 440 - 103 change cost -- $337 per person less with second routing

Downside: instead of arriving in TXL at 2pm we now arrive at 8pm so miss out on some sightseeing time

penbrook May 1, 2015 11:20 am

Are there glitches in YQ charges right now? YQ/fee amounts currently shown on the Aeroplan website seem low...e.g. Bkk-del-yyz CAD 165.70 on AI and AC. (for one way only as round trips are not working currently)

Compares to del-yyz on AC at CAD 448.10

Thats not a glitch - they still seem to charge by destination not segment - and ex-BKK YQ is low.

Tried to book YVR-LHR-VIE-BLQ/WAW-FRA-YYZ-YVR yesterday for a client in J for summer. The YQ+tax was over $1100. She sucked it up and bought a revenue Y ticket for CAD1032 instead.

So basically 90k (+10k opportunity cost) points would have been an upgrade.
