Is "E" worth $970 to you??

That's what I'll have to pay for a Saturday-Sunday MR to CDG in December to make E this year. I value lounge access and the ability to use 2 SSWU's on either one long haul NA flight or one international. I do not value the other upgrade certs as they go to waste. Priority check-in is also nice as is priority bag tags. I plan to fly about 35-45K next year.

All my travel is personal and on my own dime.

Would you pay the $970 for the MR to make it over the E threshold?

It all boils down to how important all the benefits are to you as an E. Having said that if the 970 to CDG is roundtrip, I'll take it assuming it's a last minute deal.

Considering you will make Elite the next year too, it is probably worth it. I won't fly at all next year, but I still paid for T+ on my last flight of the year that qualifies for me E. However that is only to upgrade to J.

I am actually considering laying out $just under $1100 for a 36-hr sameday turnaround MR YOW-NRT-YOW and the 13,000 miles I need to hit SE.

I think he meant that if you are flying that much, it will more comfortable if you do it with the benefits of an E.

I did similar on a r.t. to SFO a couple of years ago to ensure SE ... in the end did not need it ... but it was good to have it in the proverbial bag!

E may be worth 900 to do MR especially if you get a mini vacation out of it.
SE is definitely worth 1100 if you take 100% bonus miles. Will enable you to earn an extra 50000 miles for 100000 earned = $3500 worth of points (at .07) that you can use to get AC flights with IKK, concierge, upgrades etc.

Elite is a bit iffy but even there you could select 50% bonus miles and on 40000 would net you 20000 extra in 2008. Not sure I would value them at .07 since no IKK but even at .04, you get $800 worth of points for $900 spend plus upgrades and lounge access.

Haven't factored in the cost of your time but try and make a holiday out of it. Also you have to sleep somewhere so why not on a plane!

I paid $2000 this year, all on my own dime as well for a flight that would push me into E. Worth it? who cares. I got to fly and see someplace new.:-)

In which it wasn't an MR. Good for you! :) Spending an airfare for a significant purpose is what I normally do anyways most of the time.

correct. Yes I have no reason to fly next year, with starting work and everything, it will be a couple of years before I leave the country again. I may however do a trip back east in about a year, but that will sadly be it.
