I always thought that status qualifying levels were very simple. You either fly the segs/miles or you don't.

I doubt Aeroplan will change the AC rules for status given the long period of acceptance and practice.
My only suggestion is that Aeroplan should negotiate a life membership term, given that its principal competitor UA has such a term, and there will shortly be a 3rd Asian carriers offering life membership - SQ OZ and the soon to join Air China which requires a million kilometres for life membership. With life membership I would definitely remain in AC Aeroplan.

It's not like you're the first one ever to ask this question here. It's been asked and answered many times.

Are you sure it's KM not miles otherwise that's only 620,000 miles vs 1 million for UA. Great steal if it's right.

why fly Mar 1, 2006 7:23 pm

AC is a steal for Elite... just 35K... however its a RIPOFF for SE.. at 100K. Other airlines have promos which make the super elite status easier to get..

however AC does need to come up with something between E and SE right now a E flyer get nothing of value extra after 35k... its a VERY very long haul to 100k with no perks. :(

Again last minute tinkering by AC upper brass ruins a program.

Easy, make E 50K to lessen the gap to SE :D

Or was that just sarcastic SE humour?

Since you don't know me as well as others here -- correct, it was sarcastic.

Of course not, but seeing that you and YYZFB have only been here a short time, others will be able to tell you that I was only kidding.

It is correct - 1m kilometres. But issue is will Air China actually join Star Alliance? If so the downside is their high redemption mileage. But if you compare this with Air France KLM it is not so good, so a minor issue is whether your priority is life membership. See http://forum.airwise.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7316

I submit that ultimately the issue is which alliance you need to fly long term, not which airline. So uncertain position of Air China makes it difficult to compare and assess the best airline in Star Alliance to commit to, regardless of your priorities.

Why would AC do this when UA, DL, CO, etc. all have three tiers?

To be different. It's called a differentiator and is often used by companies to entice customers across from competitors
