OT: Is J-class addictive?
Hi folks,
As a student, I don't travel as much as I like to. But compared to many of my peers, I travel more than most. I've made status the past few years. I'm weary of using my upgrades because I don't want try the pleasures of biz class, and be bitter every time I travel economy thereafter. I gave all my certs to my parents last year. But I'm finding the temptation of biz class increasingly difficult to resist. What do you FTers think about young(ish) people travelling J-class? Any experiences to share? Thanks. |

To quote one of the best movies of 2004 (Starsky & Hutch)
Do It. Do It Do It Yeah it's addictive like you can't imagine. I used to fly YYC-LHR-YYZ-YYC just so I could upgrade using an H fare when they changed the rules :D Welcome to FT :) |

I'd hardly call it addictive. Addictive things are usually pleasurable. Travel in J class is unpleasant whereas travel in Y is painful.

*sigh*
It is highly addictive. I too find myself willing to pay a bit more just so that I can upgrade. I remember as a student I had to struggle with every dollar I had and a few times had to borrow from my parents just to get through a school term. Personally, I would wait and not spend the money on a Latitude fare just to u/g (I see you're a P which means you can't use a SSWU unless you're a companion of a E or SE). But then again, you might get an op/up in which case you will be doomed for life :D |

Where's Big Red? |
If you're a MP, airline employee, civil servant, or otherwise spending someone else's money, sure, it can be addictive.
When I was a student, fortunately I fell into the latter category when I travelled significantly in C/J. However, the company who was paying saw its stock go from over $110/share to around $0.75/share in a matter of a year or two, so it was obviously a very bad habit to be into paying for. |

I don't actually travel that much with AC, more with UA or SQ. I only fly economy if it is a one-cabin aircraft, and those flights are complete torture (i'm 6'5"). To be brutally honest, after a couple of flight of First, even Business class becomes claustraphobic :D |

And yes, flying in J, especially int'l, is very addictive. CrampedInY. |
Yes, flying J international is addictive. On domestic, though, I'm willing to suck it up in the back -- until I smell the cookies of the front cabin, then I curse, b!tch, and swear. :D
Of course, mind you, the trick in all of this is to turn it into a science -- try to find ways of not having to pay for the J seat -- look for places where there are good opportunities for op ugs, bumps, etc. |
It is very addictive- to the point where for INTL overseas I won't fly economy anymore...not good!

Yes, highly addictive (but I do what I can to keep the financial waste under control).
Most recent example, my trip YOW-ORD. I routed YOW-YUL-ORD to get J seats and avoid the dreaded CRJ. On the way back from ORD, at check-in, the clerk gave me a strange look because the non-stop ORD-YOW flight leaves about the same time as the one ORD-YUL. Why would anyone in their right mind take the stopover and frustration of transferring through YUL to get to YOW? I smiled, and said I wanted to fly in J. For me, the extra 10K points and travel time were well worth the satisfaction of avoiding the CRJ and receiving J service. |
I do get an opportunity to fly J on occasion. Most of my flights are Dash-8 where J is non-existent.The reality is AC won't let me become addicted. ;)
Mrs.acysb87 very much expects to be in J when we travel together. That is a whole other discussion. :D  |
