You know, I honestly don't get how a supposedly university-educated person could be proud to not learn something, language or otherwise. Ignoring the location of Shore9's University for a second, that comment still shows quite a lack of education.

Shore9: What if I said that I were proud of the fact that I hadn't taken a course in microbiology? It's still pretty bad. And although I am not particularily interested in microbiology, that doesn't mean that I wouldn't have wanted to broadened my horizons should I have not had other time constraints.

But give me a break, insulting the dominant language in the part of the world that you're in: honteux.

shore9 Feb 3, 2005 5:51 pm

this is more a case of not thinking before posting. I'm not really proud of the fact that I can't speak french. I do have an opportunity to speak the language, it's more that everyone usually speaks english as well, so it makes it easier for both of us. I admit I should make an effort though. Sorry this came out the wrong way, and I'm going to leave it at that.

taupo Feb 3, 2005 5:53 pm

I seriously thought of flying to YUL for the event that Parnel organised so well. The primary reason for me not attending, is my inability to speak or understand french. Am I proud of this, no. Would I like to change it, yes. Will I do anything about it, one day.

Presumably the main language spoken at this event was english no?? One of my reasons of coming to quebec other than the school, was to learn in a different culture, even if I don't speak French very well when I leave.

And the language belongs to the culture no?? Apparently it seems you didn't learn the culture very well did you? Hmm...what a shocker.

I totally agree. And for this, he should receive a timeout.

And you just want to leave this shore9? Yeah right! You're not getting out of this one.

Too bad Canada can't separate from shore9.

Wow, this thread really skyrocketed in the last 24 hours...

shore9, you were actually doing ok for awhile by being under the radar and posting reasonable questions/comments... but you just shot yourself in the foot (again?!)...
I'd like to add that I'm a first generation Canadian. My parents (before they met) both worked hard to scrounge up some money to find a better life in Canada. They tried their d@mn best to learn both official languages, because they wanted to become as Canadian as they could possibly be, and this was one small step in doing so. I grew up in Ontario and learned French up to first year Unversity. I regret not learning more French back then...

ho hum.. I want to go on and ramble, but my question to you is... do you want to start from square one again (not like you've gone far from it, but better than nothing...)???

Alright, back to stealth and ignore modes.

Gentlemen: isn't it great to have a language where "experience" is feminine?

Speaking of parnel,where is he?

taupo,I went to YUL and my French is very poor.However,the people of Quebec have always been very accomodating.I would go to Montrel or Quebec City 99 times out of 100 over Hogtown (or Oakville :D )

You would have been amongst many people I consider friends,and would have been made to feel welcome.take the chance next time.You will be pleasantly surprised. :)

Of course, I can also hit alt-shift and start typing in Canada-French.
Hit it again and I start typing on the AZERTY keyboard.
Hit it again and I start typing on the UK keyboard.

I know there used to be a stereotype that French speakers would take every opportunity to freeze out an English speaker, whether that was in Montreal, Quebec City, or Paris. I wouldn't know, but I've been told it used to happen some. But nowadays, it happens rarely if at all, and with my limited experience it's never happened to me (I do attempt to say something in French, probably to the great pain of the listener). What tends to happen when you go to Montreal is that the person you are talking to sizes you up as an anglophone or a francophone, and speaks to you in the correct language. I assume it's my lack of fashion sense that gives it away in my case. Of course, not every single person speaks English, so in those cases you just do the best you can. Really nothing to worry about at all.

Edit: I haven't been to Quebec City. So who knows how they act there.

Thanks to shore9, who may not know French at all but may have multiple talents.... :rolleyes:

Peut-etre qu'il faudra organiser une reunion pour les francophiles de AC pendant le festival d'hiver du Quebec.

(BTW you must have a pleasant temperature these days- hope the ice sculptures are still on)

We will get them to drink past the 3 am curfew :D

All it takes is 3 or 4 hits on the keyboard for you to determine you need a new life? Exactly what did they teach you over the pond - how to be a computer nerd :confused: :p

We're having great winter weather this week for the 51st Carnaval and the ice sculpture competition started last night.

This evening I'm going to a fun annual event : The Mayor of Calgary's Reception at the Hilton Panorama Room. "Please join other Business Leaders and Elected Officials in a relaxed exchange of Cultural and Business Information in the Spirit of The Calgary/Québec Twinning"; this means we'll be drinking Rye & Cokes in plastic beer cups bemoaning the NHL labour situation; a true All-Canadian event.

"Dress : Carnaval/Western and/or Business attire".

What to wear, what to wear ? :confused: Funny how they don't mention "The Alberta Thong" as being suggested dress for the event :D

shore9, you have until 1600 to drive the 230 km up here from BU and I'll take you to this party as my guest; be aware of the dress code !

Just ask any university student who goes there either for the Carnival or Spring Break.

I shouldn't have gone to bed so early last night. Looks like everyone stayed up and had a rollicking time. ;)

And for the enlightened few who use Macs ...

é = opt e, e
è = opt `, e
à = opt `, a
ê = opt i, e
ç = opt c
î = opt i, i

and, in case you go to Europe, € = opt + shift 2

Honest to God ! 5 minutes ago one of Bonhomme Carnaval's handlers walked into our reception area looking for another firm's office where the Big Snowman was expected as a guest of honour at some function !

They had the wrong address so my assistant and I ended up in the parking lot trying to coax Bonhomme out of his van. He graciously accepted ! :D

I have photographic evidence of this but don't know how to post pix. Suggestions ?
