eCoupon question

Hi all,

I have an eCoupon expiring in a couple of weeks, but I don't have any bookings I'm expecting to make in that time. If I book a random itinerary in CO, will the coupon value hold when I change the reservation later on? (I assume it would, but wanted to check nonetheless).

If you change the reservation, yes the reservation will still hold the value paid. Another alternative is to convert the voucher to AP miles if you need any... by buying a ticket with the coupon and then cancelling it after the 24 hour window.

I think the OP may be asking a slightly different question. The value paid still holds (i.e. if you pay $800 for the ticket, the $800 value remains). I'm not sure whether you are still able to apply the discount code to a changed itinerary - particularly if the change is made after the expiry of the discount code.

An eCoupon isn't a discount/promo code for a % off, it's like a gift card, reducing the cash you pay dollar for dollar.

OP, if you have an eCoupon that's about to expire, you can preserve it indefinitely by simply booking a new ticket using the eCoupon, then cancelling it in exchange for a gift card that never expires. You'll have to put up a few bucks out of pocket, but it shouldn't be hard to find a fare that's just a couple bucks more than the value of your eCoupon.

If what you actually have is a promo code that takes a percentage off the base fare, then what The Lev said applies.

Great – thank you all! Not worth too much but don't want to leave money on the table.

Kind of stupid that you book just to cancel instead of them being able to remove the date limitation.

I just noticed I have $419 left on one, gotta find a booking to do and cancel.

Sure, but we often find ourselves doing stupid stuff to work around AC's systems limitations.

Oh yes. One time I had do a name change a YYZ-LAX business class ticket, which wasn't allowed. So I changed it to a Latitude, changed the name, then changed it to a business class ticket. The reservations agent was not impressed. Cost a couple of hundred dollars in changes, but better than eating the cost of the ticket that otherwise would have been wasted.

There you go. So in this case, if you have a $300 eCoupon, find a fare that's, say, $305, book it, then cancel it for a new eCoupon that's good indefinitely. Not sure whether you need to wait >24 hours to get offered that option or whether it will automatically refund to original FOP if cancelled within that period.

I just booked a ticket with a soon-to-expire ecoupon and want to convert to AP miles. When I go to cancel, it only offers me a refund. Do I need to wait until > 24 hours to get the "convert to AP miles" option to show? Thanks.

Yes.

You may even need to wait until past midnight the following calendar day, not 100% clear. Feel free to try it right at T+24 and let us know how it goes!

I had to wait ~25hrs to cancel for points. It showed my a full refund for the first 24hrs, then it tried to give me a partial refund for about an hour after the 24hr window. Might have just been a glitch.

Apparently not a glitch. I'm at 24.5 hours past booking and like your experience it is only offering a partial refund and no other options (was full refund until 24 hours). Will try again later or tomorrow to see if/when the convert to AP miles option shows.

Edit to update: at ~25 hour mark, the convert to miles with 65% discount appeared. Awesome.

Are eCoupons now valid towards Aeroplan bookings ?

is this still the case ? Have a few eCoupons which I believe had extensions but the is probably a better way to ensure the values of the credits remain.

You can use an eCoupon to pay for any cash portion of an Aeroplan booking.
