Aeroplan - does calling in open more options?

I wanted to book PEK-CTS.
PEK-NGO-CTS was available entirely in Y online.
PEK-NGO was available in Y and J.
NGO-CTS was not available as a segment on it's own.
A combo of PEK-NGO J + NGO-CTS Y was not bookable. I called in and fed the agent the flights. He first said no. Then I asked him to search PEK-CTS. He acknowledged that worked, so no problem, I could have my J+Y booking for the $30 service fee. AE IT wins again.
At least the whole call plus ticketing took all of 12 minutes.
