Musical Aircraft

I was three for three this weekend for equipment changes on my YVR-YYC-YEG-YVR trip. Does anyone know why this would be occuring?

YVR-YYC A320 -> A340
YYC-YEG A320 -> A319
YEG-YVR A319 -> 767M

There are a lot of reasons... simple one could be your original aircraft was late and there are spare ones sitting around so they just used them instead of delaying the flight waiting for it.

Was the A340 switch last Friday? I know AC 8 YVR-YYZ (dep 17:50) switched from a A340 to domestic 767 couple hours before departure that day.

What would that mean for the pilots designated to fly that flight, though? Does that mean they had a A320 pilot flying an A340? Are all pilots rated for all AC metal?

They would have had to find another pilot

The A319/320/321 are one type and the A330/340 are another, pilots are only certified on one type at a time.

We live in N.W. Calgary so I see most of the Westbound departures and often arrivals from the West if the wind is right and have seen the A340 arriving from (YVR presumably) twice in the past couple of weeks. Yesterday saw an outbound 767 to the West and it's return several hours later. AC usually does not run those planes YYC-YVR to my knowledge. I can only speculate as to why but maybe there were heavy loads into YYC for Stampede this past week???

You will find quite a few A340 flights between YVR and YYC, these are positioning flights. Presumably taking an A340 off of the YYC-FRA route and putting it on an Asian route out of YVR and vice-versa

I was booked on an A340 for YVR-YYZ a couple weeks ago and the agent confirmed to me as late as checkin (3 hrs prior to departure) that it would be fin 904 (STAR Alliance colors) operating the flight. However, when I reached the gate at departure time they had subbed it out for an A330 instead. No change in seat assignments or anything, but still annoying.

That's no big deal. Try going from a A340 or international 763 to a domestic 762!

The pilots that did not fly got full pay as well as the pilots that did. So on two of the three flights double the cost for pilots.

Superdawg is correct with the YVR-YYC being a 340. This probably happens at least once a week and is likely planned in advance.

The 319's and 320's are interchanged depending on the loads of the day.

The puzzler is the 767 on YEG-YVR. This is generally a 737 route. It must mean that Tango took the spare aircrafts.

Actually, the A340 is only once daily on the YYC-FRA route and for the rest of summer, 2 daily YYC-LHR flights using 767s.

The YEG-YVR 767 was very odd, but it arrived from YVR as the regular flight which should have been a 737.

I too saw the 767 on the YEG-YVR run and given recent AC loads on some of these flights I'd say the load on a 767 would be alarming! It shouldn't be re-positioning as the only other 767 run from YEG is to YYZ.

I was actually glad to have the A340 for YVR-YYC due to the heat build-up over Calgary and the foothills towards Banff, when we fly over Kananaskis towards YYC approach, the plane tossed around considerably a la the bull ride at the Stampede. The crew lead gave us all an 8.6.

BTW, we arrived 45 minutes late though a the aircraft wasn't cleaned upon arrival from TPE when they brough it over to our gate C50 - 3 people cleaned the A340!

there was probably a mechanical aircraft on
the yvr-yeg route and they substituted it with a 767....I have seen this happen quite a few times. The A340 between yvr-yyc is due to equipment cycling into maintenance.

Because someone a few posts up asked.
"What would that mean for the pilots designated to fly that flight, though? "
