Pushing Tin.

Just noticed that a previous thread of mine has moved from customs to cell phones to Billy Bob Thornton in Pushing Tin. You folks are an interesting lot.

The Pushing Tin reference reminded me of how much I enjoy listing to UA's audio channel that patches you in to the cockpit and ATC (Yes I am a bit of an airplane geek - but I imagine many of you are as well) Especially amazing when you are around New York or Chicago.

Am I in the minority in enjoying this feature? It would be nice if AC could do the same.

After Burner Jun 20, 2002 9:27 am

Yes, I enjoy that feature too. Doesn't AA have this too?

But even better was listening to this on a headset in a jumpseat in an AC cockpit. That's the feature I'll really miss.

No, Channel 9 is something unique to UA.

Just got off a UA NRT-HKG flight and spent the whole flight listening to Channel 9 using my new NR headset. Love that channel and it was cool hearing Asian ATC (Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong)! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

AA discontinued it? What else have they discontinued? Closed circuit cockpit cameras? Chocolate sundaes?

Andrew Yiu Jun 20, 2002 10:57 am

Don't think AA ever had it.

I was on a UA flight from DTW to DEN and was listening to that channel. We were told on the PA there would be a delay because of weather en route. After, on CH 9, the pilot suggested an alternative, more northerly route that he felt would be better. The ATC responded that no one else had thought of that and he should give it a try. We arrived on time while everyone else was delayed. He never explained it on the PA system, but I felt we were let in on what an experienced and thoughful crew can accomplish - we never would have known it. I thanked him as I left the plane. It was a particularly nice trip for that reason.

Afterburner is right! The big loss is being able to listen from the jump seat! I have fond memories of take off from YOW. Much more interesting than being in the back, and the view is amazing too!

That's not good enough. The best was Kai-Tak! I've sat up there in the flight deck for landing on CP many times and couple times on CX and once on DragonAir. Truly missed it!

While I never did it from the flight deck, even in the back of a CP jumbo looking out the window and seeing residents hanging their laundry is a one in a million shot (There must be a shot like that in the photo gallery somewhere). Almost like the MUNI in Edmonton but soooo much better

I, too miss the flight deck VERY MUCH. And like Empress, I has the pleasure of doing a Dragonair 320 landing at Kai Tak at night. Great fun!

One of my main reasons I fly UA is for Ch. 9. I always request it, but I find that it's only on 50 - 60% of the time. SEA-NRT-SIN was fascinating on Ch. 9. (ATC from SEA, YVR,OAK,ANC,NRT,Naha,TPE,MNL,Ho Chi Minh, SIN etc.) That, my AC or IFR (Jet) route charts & my GPS map keeps me very amused en route.

AA absolutely did have this feature. I used to do DFW-HNL trips frequently and always looked forward to this. Perhaps it was only on some equipment. It was definitely on their 747s and DC10s.

FewMiles Jun 20, 2002 12:45 pm

What 747s and DC10s? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Off topic, but Garuda Indonesia had a video camera on the landing gear (or nearby) that was put on the main screens. Made for an interesting take off and landing (although the angle was slightly off centre, which made it more interesting.

Don't tell me! That's something else AA discontinued??
