AC Waitlist Protocol
 
Is there a clear and transparent and logical way AC approches the upgrade waitlist? Or am I dreaming?

In all seriousness, there is not. I view the lack of transparency and consistency in processing upgrades as a serious failure on the part of Air Canada.

For me, the worst is the "gate wait" where you have no idea whether to board first (in order to secure overhead bin space) or to hang around at the gate to see if your upgrade clears. You can try to ask but I find it stressful and inconsistent.

Another issue for me (which I accept is not directly related to your question) is the fact that the system will not offer an LMU for purchase at check-in where you're on the upgrade waitlist. If I can see the flight is full-ish I'd like the option of being able to decide which "currency" to use, cash or eUps.

It's pretty clear (albeit all from the experience of those on here) and has been written about several times:

1) Revenue tickets before award tickets; within that:
2) By status tier (SEs before E75s, then E50s, etc); within each tier:
3) By fare class (higher fare class goes first)

So all SEs will be cleared before they go to E75s. SEs will be cleared in order of the fare class they purchased (Y, then B, then M, etc). Once all SEs are accommodated, they'll start the E75s, and again clear them in order of fare class. Then they do the E50s, etc, etc. Only after all revenue tickets have been dealt with will they consider SEs on award tickets.

The only complicating factor involves itineraries that start somewhere other than the point of departure of the flight we're considering. There's some element whereby people can be upgraded based on having started their journey earlier, but it's unclear how that works.

This is upgrade waitlist, not standby waitlist, correct?

Also, does this logic apply to op-ups too (after all e-Ups are cleared of course)?

Don't forget the anecdotal evidence that a connecting P25K has priority over an originating S100K...

Funny though, I like certain seats in J, so if I do not get my J seat seven days out, I skip it all together now.

On my flight Pass to YVR this weekend I was upgraded seven days out great got the seat I wanted, coming home waitlisted so I said nah, one hour flight, sit in my nice seat in the back :D

THis may be what is written, but it is cerintly not what gets followed. I have nominated for an upgrade and waitlisted YYZ/YYC. I had no status - nothing. I was offered the last upgrade at the gate when three others with status (one of whom was an SE) were standing next to me and grumbling they didnt preboard while waiting to find out they didnt get upgraded.

If it was this clear cut, it would be very easy for a GA to tell you your probability of clearing or whether you should just pre-board...

Still used as a tie breaker for same status, same fare bucket at the gate according to the concierges at YUL

Yes, if you convince someone to do this and it doesn't clear by T-24 you will be lower priority than you would be on your own as an E35 using your own credits..... (if you could actually, depending on your fare), but higher than any nominee of an E50 regardless of their personal status.

Makes my head spin

What? The no status passenger is cleared before a status nominee? You said that nominees are cleared after status passengers. That doesn't make sense since the no status passenger isn't a status passenger. The no status passenger therefore shouldn't be cleared before a status nominee...

And under what means does a no status, non-nominated passenger request an upgrade? S/he should not have any eUp credits, correct?

This thread just got 1000x more confusing.
