Well I guess that solidifies it for me. I was pondering on whether to fly AC or Continental/Unites next year for a friends wedding. Continental was already cheaper than AC out of EWR... Was willing to pay the fare difference for the convenience of flying out of YYZ but the 50% hit just kills it for me.

You don't say where you are flying to.

At this point, not so many overseas destination with Tango fare, are there?

Now with the (re)introduction of Tango on international routes the lowest fares will not give me the same status miles or upgrade opps. The infrequent traveler doesn't have upgrade credits so that point is moot and probably doesnt place the same value on status miles so again that point is moot. So I would argue that these changes actually target frequent travelers where their travel policies require them to book the lowest available fares.

+1
It will all depend on how aggressive they are in terms of re-labelling what are currently Tango Plus fares as Tango internationally, but I am sensing that what they meant at SMD3 was that the visible parts of the program would not change much - it's the less visible stuff (think IKK).

This frog is starting to get toasty in the pot of water.

i see them...............

but this whole thing separates the boys from the men...........

now i can see them potentially raising the Elite qualifying criteria to 50,000

My thoughts exactly. While it is too bad that the mileage is now only 50%, I thought that many international desitnations were structured similar to the US where Tango fares often aren't even offered.

Wouldn't reducing the status miles earned on flights be an argument against raising the qualifying criteria to 50k?

US based airlines typically require 50k status miles to earn *G status, but pretty much all of their revenue fare classes earn 100% mileage, even the dirt cheap fares.

AC only requires 35k miles to qualify for *G, but many of the revenue fare categories earn 0 status miles. Someone could fly 100,000BIS miles domestically on Tango fares and have no status to show for it. Reducing the status miles earned on international flights will make it harder for many people to hit 35k miles, so why raise the requirement to 50k?

Not at this point. But with AC you never know when that might change.. ;)

Tango went from 100% to 0% to 25% non-status, the last change was about 4 years ago.

Is the new 50% earning for international status or non-status?

And I've never seen a Tango international fare. From LHR all the fares are T+ or higher. The only time you can end up on a Tango fare is if you get a connecting domestic flight in which case the connection is 25% non-status. Is that what you mean by T intenational? Or else where are there Tango international fares?

allstar_yvr Sep 24, 2011 2:33 pm

Tango fares are already making an appearance on AC direct international flights from YVR and YYZ to asian destinations (HKG, PEK, PVG). It's likely only a matter of time before these appear on all international routes....

T international fares gives 50% statut miles (and one statut segment), only for international segment. For domestic/transborder connecting flight it is as usual 25% non-statut miles and no statut segment.

Death by one thousand cuts? They should change Tango to 100% status miles, and raise the *G requirement to 50k. Tango is still differentiated as it's not upgradable.

I have seen Tango plus J......... that was funny....... Tango Plus with D booking class from HKG to YVR.......

folks, you know the 50,000 miles Elite re-qualifying criteria is only a joke

Gonna be interesting to see how some employees justify to their employer paying an additional $100-200 for Tango Plus fares.....some of the companies i know have policies regarding the reservation of the lowest fare
