So, I've been keeping an eye on a ticket I need for January next year, for which there was no business class availability open on the day I have to return. Until I checked yesterday as a final check before committing to a cash ticket, when suddenly a TAP routing in business class was reported as available by the website.

However, the booking fell over after the stage of completing the name, phone number, etc etc.

However, booking each segment individually as one ways - for both the chosen outbound direct flight, and the return TAP connecting flight - would allow the booking flow to proceed as far as the payment stage.

This morning, the same connection is available online, and the same error reported. So I rang. Listed the dates and the flight numbers. The agent replied, with a comical level of incredulity in her voice: "But there is no seat available on that flight!".

So - what to do? I *could* book both as one ways, but as there is a decent chance this trip will need to be cancelled at short notice, I'd prefer to have it all on one booking and get hit only with a single €20 cancellation fee, rather than 2. I guess a "hang up and call again" may be in order

I called back, got a more engaged agent, who spent a lot of time looking into it.

The agent confirmed that return tickets using different carriers is not a problem.

However, having consulted the M+B desk, she returned saying that, in this instance, these flights couldn't be combined on the same ticket, and would have to be booked separately as one ways, and would therefore each be subject to a €20 charge (if cancelled - which is why I was ringing to have them on the same ticket in the first place, to become subject only to a single cancellation fee).

I tried to probe further, to find out - is it that TAP and United can't be combined on a single ticket? What was it about this ticket that it couldn't be issued on a single ticket? The agent wasn't any more forthcoming about that; just that these flights couldn't be issued together on the same return ticket.

So, booked myself via the website:

AMS-IAD UA business 45,000 miles + €40.55
IAD-LIS-AMS TP business 45,000 miles + €17.81

Last edited by irishguy28; Aug 8, 2019 at 3:36 am Reason: clarified that the €20 was for cancellation

Nice price. That's a pity that it couldn't be combined on the same ticket, but 20 euros extra in case of cancellation won't break the piggy bank

Aegean's website does sometimes fall at the last minute, even with revenue tickets.

This issue, as I understand it, was not being able to book both TP and UA on the same ticket.

It's certainly not an issue with other carriers, as I've had SQ and OZ on a single redemption ticket before.

The problem I experienced wasn't related to issuing an all-TP ticket, or in issuing a one way ticket. As you will see above, I had an IAD-LIS-AMS in TP business issued for 45k +€17

It's just my particular combination of UA outbound, TP inbound [the only business class option available on my specific dates], couldn't be booked as one ticket.

Whether this extends to all TP/UA combinations, or whether other combinations are problematic (which i find difficult to believe, given that the agent confirmed initially near the start of the call that mixed-carrier combinations are allowed on A3 redemption tickets), I can't confirm. I tried pressing to understand specifically why it was an issue, but the agent didn't know, or couldn't say beyond this combination was not bookable.

And, again, it's no real biggy. The only downside is that if I have to cancel, I will have to pay €20 on each ticket, rather than a single €20. I'm hoping I won't have to cancel this trip, but even so, a €40 cancellation is not worth getting worried about.

I'm just more curious as to why this combination proved unbookable.

Mixed carrier award tickets are, indeed, allowed. Three years ago I flew Panama City-San Juan (CR) and back; Avianca out, Copa in.

I've just noticed that, on the United website and e-ticket, they have converted my A3*G status to "Premier Silver"...which maps to *S.

It's not a problem and not something I am seeking to correct; I just posted this anomaly as something of a curiosity.

(Or, maybe United views as A3*Gs as mere Premier Silvers!)

There is no requirement to remove/update the FFP number; it's a mileage ticket so there is no mileage earning; it's a business ticket, so the perks of business are sufficient for my needs; I am in no way impacted by their mistranslation of my status

But it might mean in the case of IRROPS you get the Best Western instead of the Sheraton

Another anomaly: the UA confirmation tells me my upgrade is confirmed - although I redeemed directly into business class...
