As I mentioned above, my AMEX was declined because with the pre-authorisation I would have gone over my limit. Confirmed this over the phone with AMEX who could see the declines due to not enough available credit (although I suspected for a while that the hotel just didn't want to take my AMEX). If the pre-authorisation - which was for the previous hotel I had stayed in and already paid for - had not been in place I should have been able to comfortably afford the hotel bill.

Interesting. I was thinking that I might use a different card for pre-authorisations, and then pay with the Amex. If you refuse, what happens? Do they charge your room rate up front?
