While I've never seen anything close to that happening, I would recommend if it was to happen again to immediatly cancel the reservation, and book another one at the lower rate. Even if you couldn't cancel online, call directly and cancel it. You should never have a rate change that you don't have the option to view or accept or cancel or whatever first.
