ONT's baggage screening machines are the out-in-front, take-up-space-in-the-terminal kind. I was asked to take my bag to the kindly TSA folks for screening - and something inside set off the explosives detectors.
A second nice TSA guy asked to open the bag, gently rummaged around, and said, "Ahhh, that's it...New Balance running shoes. New Balance and Skechers, that'll do it."
He explained that New Balance and Skechers shoes have a sole dense enough to alert the explosives detectors. "Anything denser than peanut butter, they'll catch it," he said.
Hmmmmm.
Anyone else heard a TSA person point to a specific brand of shoe as being more likely to set off the detectors at baggage screening?
P.S. I then walked through the METAL detectors at security screening...in Skechers...no problem.
