It's possible that hotels are doing this for altruistic reasons, but that's unlikely in most cases. As we are constantly reminded here on FT, hotels (like airlines) are in business to make money, and cutting costs is part of that. (Of course, businesses always try to "spin" cost-cutting in a positive way.)

The trick is to not cut too much too fast. We're at the point now where luxury hotels can get away with not changing the sheets every night to "save the environment" (although not in any hotel that I'm paying $200/night for), but not yet to the point where they can mount cheap, tacky dispensers on the wall. Frankly, I hope we never get there.

Those who want to conserve can use their Kippie bag to reuse the mini-bottles as much as they wish, and everybody is happy! ^
