I believe the problem that agent was having was making sure the passenger had elite status, not that elite passengers can check 2nd bag free. As an agent I have had a few times an elite passenger with nothing in the reservation showing their elite status. This could be because of how they booked their reservation. Many frequent fliers have so many different cards that most only have the number in their PDA and do not travel with the card, so if it is not in the reservation and the passenger does not have the card, we have to verify it some other way. Airtran is very strict on us about collecting fees to the point that we have had internal memos that say for those who are not collecting the correct fees, the station manager needs to "get them off of payroll". So please forgive the agent who wants to charge you $29.00 if your bag is 1 pound overweight or 1 inch oversized. Our jobs are being threatened if we don't, and even though we are getting a pay cut, we still need to keep our jobs.
