You can't use UA miles for international upgrades on any other Star Alliance carriers besides Lufthansa.

I haven't checked to see whether SA participates in Star Alliance Upgrades such that you could use another carrier's frequent flyer program. I do know that Hyatt points transfer to SA.

But I assume your fare classes are not upgradeable...
