I just found out that a 747-400 uses approximately 56,500 gallons of fuel to fly the 7,432 miles from SFO to SYD.
Total capacity is about 64,000 gallons, so they probably take off with at least 60,000. At $4.50 per gallon, that one flight is burning over $250,000 in fuel.
